Do both. The quality of back links is more important these days so write about your product yourself and place the articles on high calibre social networking sites as well as creating social bookmarks. Also build a Facebook business page and have a dedicated twitter account.

Anything that you do manually with unique quality writing (not spamming copying content) and try to spread these them anywhere you can regularly will help you in the long term at SEO standpoint.

And it is my understanding that Google doesn't like "exact" anchor text from other sites. That is a sign (to them) that you are trying to SEO rather than create natural copy. Just something else to keep in mind.

I believe what you are saying is vary your anchor text. Use your main keyword for that page in about half of your links, and then vary the rest using the main keyword and adding a word or two to it. So you have LSI anchor text in about half of the links, so it seems like others did the linking and were not familiar with the main keyword you wanted to rank for.:p
