Hi Guys,
I am at the beginning stages of my marketing services business offering customers various marketing services such as email campaigns, graphic design and website development.

I have only just learned how to build websites using Wordpress (still learning to be honest). However my question is, if I was to offer the service of building a website to a customer who will be hosting the site and who pays for it - the customer or me?

Thanks in advance.

Don't do it. You don't have enough experience.
Trust me, you don't know what you don't know. Problems will eat you alive.

I'm actually going to have to agree with kpmedia on this one.

Its true what kpmedia is saying. But alternatively you could choose to eat the problems alive.
If you really want to do this I would spend a month really hardcore and then start something simple with the customer that you feel confident about.

Perhaps another way to approach your desire to do this is simply provide the one service that you are most adept at performing, perhaps managing email lists or updating social media. A large percentage of small business owners are not very skilled at maintaining regular email communication - this could prove to be quite lucrative if you master that one area and help small businesses maintain regular communications with their customer base.

I agree with the above post, however, I want to be more positive for you.

Take on small clients, and nothing too big. Also, have them do all the hosting. Just set it up for them.

    Thanks guys for your thoughts.

kpmedia - I guess my limited experience is my downfall but i do feel confident enough to 'Building' a website via wordpress. Its just the backend stuff that i need to get my head around.

tdanz - That's what I did. I watched lots of videos on YouTube, read numerous articles and as a starting point i created a website for a friend of mines (ecommerce site selling mobile gadgets). Not sure if i am allowed to post the web address as it maybe classed as advertising ( I generally this is frowned upon in forums).

Ron Vogt - Good advice Ron and I am certainly stronger in other areas but what happens if a potential client asks if i can build them a new site? I could always outsource the service but then i would be losing out on potential earnings.

OnlineStoreHelp - Excellent point regarding downtime/reseller package (didnt think of that). I am currently with VidaHost and i am sure they offer some sort of reseller package.

HeadStartSEO - Thats my initial plan to take on small businesses to build a portfolio and then expand to bigger organisations. However (i maybe wrong), I feel if i host the site then there is an opportunity to upsell on other services such as maintaining the site?

Guys, really appreciate your input and would like to show my appreciation but not sure how to "thank" a persons comment....please tell...

I have been using Hostgator's reseller package since 2006 and I have no complain, actually their support is awesome. Probably you should consider them too, start with a small package and as you grow you can move to dedicated managed server anytime.

Build your own site first, get it hosted, market it and hook up all the services you intend to do for other clients too. Solve your own problems and headaches before taking on those of others. If you're very comfortable with the front end stuff, why not team up with a Wordpress 'techie' who knows the ins and outs of the backend and security. Trust me, you don't want to be left with Wordpress hacks or security breaches when you don't know what you're doing. Ahhh, many moons ago!!!
