Hosting for ecommerce

ECOMMERCE

I'm currently using hostgator as a provider and it pretty much sucks. What kind of hosting do you guys use?

It should be fast, easy to use, reliable, handle scalability for ecommerce and rather cheap.

Any recommendations? AWS?

Fast, reliable, or cheap, pick any two!

If you want reliable and cheap, try Siteground, if you want fast and reliable try Nexcess. I won't mention the name of any fast and cheap hosts that are unreliable, because they are... well... unreliable.

If you are willing to compromise a little on each of those requirements, then you can find some decent hosting companies like Host Duplex, faster than average, more reliable than average, and cheaper than most fast and reliable hosting services.

These are just a few examples that I currently use, there are many others.

  The larger sites typically run their own servers that are co-located in data centers, or use services like AWS to run a set of distributed server networks. Nearly every medium to large e-commerce store, as well as many small stores, serves part of their content through 3rd party CDN (Content Delivery Networks) services which distributes the server load across many data centers.

  In that case you should look at Magemojo.com They specialize in Magento hosting and they use SSD storage for very fast access speeds. SSD hosting is a bit more expensive, but fractions of seconds can make a measurable difference in eCommerce conversion rates.

  I agree with you but when we use hosted cart, we will be on their mercy. If they raise prices of their package, then we need to pay them.

  When was the last time any of the big 3 raised their prices? :rolleyes:
  
  I look at it this way ... do you want to be in the website building business or the making money business? Let's say your site is successful, do you want to be the guy who's repairing corrupt databases, monitoring for hackers, optimizing them for higher views, etc. Are you hosting with a web host with geo-redundant servers (and paying extra for it) so your site doesn't go down? If it DOES go down, who's fault is it, your host? Your code? How do you figure it out? Are you making regular backups of your site and transactional data so if a hacker gets in and trashes your system you can roll back and still have all of your customer data from the same day? Yesterday? A week ago? What happens if Facebook and Twitter or UPS and FedEx release different versions of their API, will your site still even work? Is the developer going to get a plugin out in time, and will their update work with any customizations you've made?
  
  If you go with a hosted cart, you don't have to worry about ANY of that crap. It's like having a team of engineers working 24/7 to make sure your site is always up, backed-up, fast, updated, compatible with the latest versions of every third party integration, and can scale if you become a Fortune 500 company. You simply don't get that level of response out of any shopping cart script. Paying $30 or $50 or $100 per month is well worth it if you're serious. If you want to stay in the little league forever, use whatever free script you want. But if you want to treat it like a real business, and grow it into something real, leave the technical details to a team of highly-paid nerds and focus on running your business.

  Ron doesn't want to pitch his own service. Forget about Shopify and all the rest, Ron developed his own service to improve on all those that his multi million dollar clients use, and came up with his own service. Ask him and I believe he is giving away free hosting till the end of the year.
  
  Check k out his web site at RonRule and find lots of informative information on eCommerce. And if you need help with it, he consults, check his background and you will see he knows his stuff. That is how he was able to develope a better mousetrap for eCommerce clients.

Why do you hate hostgator? I've been with them for 7+ years. This includes several ecommerce websites as well that I developed from scratch using Wordpress.

  The old Hostgator is gone.
  
  It was bought out in June 2012, and by May 2013 it was getting massively screwed up by the new owners (EIG). The nastiest incident was in August 2013, and last several weeks. However, while the big issue is over, there are still MANY smaller ones. And do not confuse "smaller" with "minor" as the issues are still major. It's just not so bad that the whole datacenter goes offline.
  
  I guess you don't check your site every 3-5 minutes? That'd be why you think it's "fine".

  I agreed that using hosted cart will save you headache down the line. They have all the necessary apps to run your store. The important thing of running store is having traffic. You can create your store in minutes and just focus on bringing in visitors.

Chances are, you just need a better host. How many products do you have & what's your user base like?

"fast, reliable, cheap" = pick any two, you cannot have all three.

If you have a reasonably high amount of traffic, avoid shared hosting accounts.

I'd had my host essentially bring my ecommerce site offline due to "using too much resources", during the peak of Christmas shopping season!!

I prefer you Bluehost and iPage for your hosting.

use any reputable web host, there is a company called Asmallorange, they have been around for a while they have good customer service and are priced ok, i have been hosting with them for smaller projects and some smaller ecommerce sites built with woocommerce/wordpress, the magento sites i have are hosted with Rackspace cloud who are a little more expensive but fast and more reliable with amazing support.

I would suggest hostgator, asmallorange, mediatemple anyone like that.. Site5, any 'well known web host that have been around for a long time'

Hostgator, Bluehost, iPage, A Small Orange = all the same host = EIG. Avoid. You've been fooled into thinking they're different companies ... they're not.

MediaTemple is good.
Site5 is good.

Magento is a resource hog. I'd get a semi-dedicated plan from Stablehost. Shared won't work.

The other option is managed VPS, from the likes of LiquidWeb or MediaTemple. But I'd suggest semi-dedicated. It's lower cost, and is better for novices.

I also prefer hosting my own carts. Not a fan of hosted solutions. That can be just as big a PITA as anything, because you're at the mercy of that company saying what you can and cannot sell, forced "upgrades", etc. I'll do my own sites, thanks.
