Question about Magento 301 redirects that aren't working

Can someone help me out with a question about 301 redirects with magento?

I am rebuilding a website that was on an archaic ecommerce platform and rebuilding it with Magento. I have 4000+ page and product links from the old site and have new links for those to be redirected to. This is a csv file.

I have followed the information in this blog post;
Bulk 301 redirects in Magento with CSV file import phpmyadmin

I have created the csv as indicated and imported test entries to the database via phpmyadmin.

Here is a sample:

Half of my test entries have a back slash ('/') before the target link and half don't because I wasn't sure which it was supposed to have in order to work. The blog post didn't indicate. The old link did have it.

But the redirects aren't working and I am not sure what else I need to do. Do I need a specific rule in the htaccess file? If so, what would it be?

My htaccess file has Rewrite Engine On.

I hope someone can help me out with this!

Thanks.

    Magento redirects are powerful but they can be a bit tricky to learn at first. My suggestion is to get just 1 working manually through the magento interface.

    Once you get that working you will understand the proper format for your particular use. But until you have that figured out it doesn't make sense to try a bulk import of 4000 SKUs.

    I have been trying this with a sample set of 20 redirect links, not all 4000. The author of the blog post which I took the import instructions from, did get back to me and say that the target path does not need the slash before the link.

    But I am still unclear on the htaccess file. Something is preventing these links from redirecting.

    I could still use some advise on this. Thanks!
