Tracking Sales (Magento)?

Does anyone have any recommendations on what software to use to track where sales are coming from besides google analytics?

I get a lot of sales from comparison engines and a lot of them give a tracking code to put into the checkout successful page.

I am looking to put all these tracking codes into the software and just put one tracking code on the success page.

    Hi wonderd,

Google Analytics is probably your best bet, unless you are prepared to shell out a good deal of money. You should have absolutely no trouble tracking all of those traffic sources with GA, I used it on many ecommerce websites and it works great at tracking traffic from comparison engines. It even tracks assited conversions across multiple channels. However, there are some things that GA does not track.

Google Analytics does not track data for individual visitors, for that reason you may find an addition analytics program to be useful for gaining deeper insight into your website traffic. My preference is an open source program called Piwik, which does a great job of tracking individual sessions and IP addresses.

As far as installing tracking code snippets from your comparison engines, it is a double edged sword, so to speak. Some of them do give you useful data, but not all of them provide much beyond what you already get from your own analytics software. The downside is that you are providing very useful information to the comparision shopping engines which are competitors targeting the same traffic that you are also targetting. So, in effect, you are providing data to a competitor who targets the same traffic you are seeking, and they share that traffic with all of your other competitors that also use their service.

The bottom line, IMHO, you are giving the comparison engines more than they give back to you, and they will use that info to better compete against you for the same traffic. Some of those shopping engines do provide useful data and some do not. Use your common sense when sharing data, make sure that you are getting something worthwhile in exchange for what you are sharing.
