I am putting together my website as well as business cards. I'm about to order my business cards and I want to put a number on my website where people can call me up and I can speak to them with no problem. I don't want to give out my personal number out. Would you recommend skype or google voice? I use Google for everything I can since I can integrate everything with it. Right now my budget is very little so I would think google voice is the best choice but I'd like to get other opinions on the subject. Thank you in advance for your opinions.

Skype is great as it works pretty much from anywhere both geographically and device wise. It also integrates nicely now with Microsoft services obviously.

That said, there's a growing number of SAAS based services out there e.g. Grasshopper that claim to be better for small business.

I use Skype. It works well for calls and receiving voice mail, and IM, but for the video chat it's hit and miss--most of the time miss. I think when my year is up, I will move to something else. (And before you ask, yes: I have updated Skype to the latest version; it's just glitching for me.)

I'm in Australia and I make a lot of calls to friends back in the States using both Skype and Google Voice... Skype to Skype calls are free... but for really important calls I prefer Google voice because the sound quality is far superior than Skype.

  • I have been using Skype but Google Voice sounds intriguing.

    Hi TheInsuranceGuy,

I recommend that you use both Skype an Google Voice. Google Voice is best for customers that use POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), and Skype is best when used for Skype-to-Skype calls, IMing, and chatting, or Video calls.

What I do is post both: Google Voice for the Phone Number, and Skype name for Skype-to-Skype calls. Inside the US, most people still use POTS, while internationally Skype is popular.

If you want to get really sophisticated, you could also tryout the Twilio service for lots of advanced features that can be integrated into your website as well as your business software and systems.

While using Skype is nice, it looks really strange to just have a Skype address on your business card. You can get a real phone number from Skype but it costs $5 per month.

If money is an issue I suggest to use Google voice for now.

Skype, because it is easier for everyone to use and since you are going to run a business, communicating through Skype will be much easier for your customers compared to Google Voice.

It depends on how you access your site. If over a hard wire connection Google Voice is great but it fails more often in wifi hotspots than Skype.
