STAY AWAY FROM BIGCOMMERCE

I signed up with Bigcommerce to start my store during the end of January. I had tried Magento before that but its interface was too complicated for me to go ahead with it so I was looking for something simpler, and found that it in bigcommerce. I've learned it now that that is the only good thing that bigcommerce can offer.

I worked hours and days on the website, and finally went for the integration with a payment gateway of my choice. The integration failed because of some reason. I contacted the gateway, and according to them the integration Bigcommerce has with them is outdated and Bigcommerce hasn't updated their version. I report the issue to Bigcommerce. It's been two weeks today and the problem hasn't been resolved. I got a couple of emails in between, and that's it. The emails I got just said the same thing that the problem has been escalated.

Two entire weeks of my precious time have been wasted on waiting for Bigcommerce to come up with a solution to a problem with one of their partners. The support team is no good either, most of the time they have the same answer.

I can't rely on such people with my business. I'm just considering the alternatives now. I like shopify so far. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you are having a unique bad experience and it may not be the fault of bigcommerce but the developers of the app who have not updated the app to the latest version of bigcommerce. This regularly happens with other shopping carts such as OpenCart and osCommerce in that when they update the code older apps no longer work.

Regardless, I prefer shopify and they offer a much more simplistic interface and have many payment systems such as BC. Support forums are the main draw in that you usually get help from other members rather than having to wait for a member of staff. My only downside is the limited free and premium templates available.

You got it wrong, bro. It is bigcommerce which is not updated with the latest version of the app, not vice-versa.

They are both at fault but I would blame the gateway just as much. Integrating a gateway and payment system into a cart is not easy and especially when you are worried about PCI compliance and keeping your level 1 certification, It is not as simple as saying, ok we want to integrate this. It takes testing, programmer time and if it is a gateway that is not as used that much, I don't blame them for not spending the resources.

That being said, if it doesn't work anymore, take it off your list of integrated gateways. Most gateway's when they change integration methods also allow you to integrate in legacy ways. Many will allow you to emulate authorize.net or another larger gateway provider so why they haven't gone out of their way to push Bigcommerce to update the integration method, or provide a legacy method is pretty much their fault, not BigCommerce's.

Why am I betting you are using a merchant account provider that throws their own gateway in at no cost (something like quantum)? Have you asked your merchant account provider why they haven't pushed the cart provider to make the updates?

I had a similar experience with their customer support. Some people love them, though. I guess everyone has their own unique experience.

I eventually landed at CoreCommerce and I loved it, though I did cancel. I'll likely rejoin again in the next couple months. I jumped into ecommerce too quickly and it became a distraction to what I was already having success with. I couldn't justify continuing to pay for something I wasn't going to use right away.

You might want to check them out.

I can't claim to be an expert on Bigcommerce or Shopify, though I have used both pretty extensively.

We've had customers switch to Ashop from both.

Customers coming from Bigcommerce have said that they find our interface much easier to use and customers switching from Shopify said that they hated paying transaction fees or that it was missing a crucial feature they needed.

What payment gateway were you looking for? We support 80+, so it's pretty likely that we can accommodate your needs.

What gateway are you using? Just use stripe and paypal and you'll be setup in about 10 minutes.

Big commerce is awesome, I've been using it for over 1 year and just started another shop on it this week.

I run multiple sites on big commerce, and i work for one of the worlds largest and most successful .com company's and honestly bigcommerce for useability is amazing compared to the software and systems we use at work even! I Agree with Eyetrap use stripe and paypal cal it good in most cases strip is cheaper than other payment gatways depending on how you look at it, i have used paymenttech and some others after the fees and crap you have to deal with stripe is better. Big commerce does lack some features, but on the other hand if you know what you are doing every thing can be manipulated to meet your needs it just depends on your technical skill level.

      Hi Ali,

To be upfront, I work at Bigcommerce. We're really sorry to hear that you had such a poor experience. I just pulled up your account and am going to escalate your concerns around the CCAvenue payment gateway not working in your store directly to our product team. I will be in touch with you shortly via email with next steps.

Secondly, thanks @AZJ0SH, @eyetrap, and @motojeff for the kind words. Glad to "see" you guys love the platform.

Not sure if you will see this reply, but can you guys please stop improving the BigCommerce admin backend? I love the new features, but it's sooo slow to enter a manual order now, it takes 5-10 seconds per screen. Or do you know a way I can revert to the old/light version ?

@AZJ0SH: We're so glad to hear that you like all the new features.

Thanks for the constructive feedback on how we can improve the manual order process.

I've read some really good reviews on BigCommerce and now very surprised to hear anything bad about the company. I guess it pays to hear both sides of the story. Though it's good you had such great success with the site.

As per my personal experience Magento is best among all. Whenever I make any new ecommerce site Magento remains my top priority.

    Hello Ali,

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, it happens sometime. I have been using Bigcommerce for last 2 years or so, and believe me it's nothing like anything. I have done my Bigcommerce integration with Orderhive for order management and inventory management system. You should try it for best integration experience.

I use Woocommerce with Wordpress. Simple to use and with extensions has all the features that I need plus no monthly fees. There are quite a few gateway extensions available with it.

Thanks for this post. I had tough time deciding which ecommerce platform to use. In the end I settled for Shopify. Reading your post, I am glad I chose shopify.

    • Hey Ali,

Who did you end up going with? Surprised by your negative experience with Bigcommerce. I work for a 3P inventory software and we integrate with them, and so far our customers selling on Bigcommerce have been very happy. I hope what you encountered was just an isolated situation.

Did you try out Shopify? We think they're great. We integrate with them, as well as 3dcart and ZenCart...all of which are good options (it all depends on how comfortable you are with developing your site vs. having themes and templates pre-made).

I hope you found something you like and are enjoying success.

I use prestashop and it is quite easy to work with although you need to be careful with some of the themes that you may want to buy. I had a nightmare working with one of the themes that i bought off codecanyon.
