I would recommend using WordPress and installing WooCommerce as a plugin for the shopping cart. Easy to use and can come handy.

I've heard good things about Magento, which has been owned by ebay since 2011. It's still open source apparently, so well supported. A bit too demanding to run on shared hosting, but more suitable for VPS or dedicated server.

Then you have Zen cart which is very popular. Also open source with an active community forum.

Open Cart is another possibility. Open source, with support via forum or paid support.

When it comes to shopping carts there is a lot of choice!

Gonna check out majento! Cheers and the others I have kind of looked into but not fully. Guess its just a matter of trying one or two and just doing it

Go hosted if you're not experience i.e Shopify or BigCommerce, focus on shipping vs technical issues. Once you've built a business, build your own platform using a proprietary or open source software platform.

There's a lot of good advice in this thread.

I think that the best answer for you depends on your experience and abilities when it comes to coding and managing a website's back-end.

If you're relatively new to that game, it definitely makes the most sense to go with a hosted solution. Something that'll be really easy to use right out of the box (like Bigcommerce) is going to be your best bet.

In fact, I know that Bigcommerce is very easy to use and has a lot of great responsive store choices that are super easy to put together. I've seen some pretty nice-looking stores put together without a whole lot of effort or technical expertise. Hope this helps!

Magento I agree is the best if you want to fully integrate the shopping cart with your site. It does take some work and may be worth it to hire someone who knows how to do this already. It was a nightmare when I tried to do this myself.

Go with what you can budget, then eventually grow into a complete custom solution with all the bells and whistles. Wordpress is useful and does in fact work, use shopperpress, Shopify and BigCommerce are useful as well.

I use WooCommerce. Hasn't disappointed me yet. It supports Paypal out of the box and many other payment gateways via extension.

  There are extensions for USPS, UPS, FedEX and numerous other shippers for WooCommerce. Just go to woothemes.com and then click on extensions and put shipping in the search bar.

3dCart is actually another great hosted solution that I know is quite easy to use. A lot of our customers really like it, and just like with Bigcommerce, I've seen some really nice-looking web stores set up by online sellers who don't have a ton of design or coding experience at all.

If you don't have a lot of experience with coding and/or programming, I would actually advise steering clear of Magento.

If you think you've got some decent experience, you can definitely go for it.

Also, if you're not down hiring a developer to work with you -- this is what a lot of eCommerce sites wind up doing in order to get things working exactly they way they're wanted.

The bottom line is that Magento can be pretty tough to work with. Unless you get the Enterprise (Paid) Edition, the Community Edition is free and open-source, so it doesn't come with any kind of support. There are, however, a ton of message boards and forums that you can use for help.

Really? What is this based on? When is coding and development necessary to use Magento? Please explain.

My experience has been different. I have used Magento for over 2 years and have never coded anything and have never hired a developer. We have 63,000 SKUs, 2000+ orders per month and 17 extensions installed.

I do agree that Magento is more sophisticated that many eCommerce platforms but that does not mean you have to be a software developer to use it.

Actually it does, just most fiddle with it because it is a technical platform - usually the implementation providers trying to justify chargout, the owner making it more complex than it needs to be, or as is most often the case both combined. An out-of-the-box Magento is actually better than one with many extensions and code - more stable - easier to rank. We have seen a basic install with virtually no code havin 30,000 products and off-the-shelf theme rank first page next to Amazon within a few weeks (specialist hosting). Whether it is the correct platform is another matter, you can use skus, yearly revenue among others to detemine the platform. You can read our comments here http://www.warriorforum.com/ecommerc...ml#post9369095 - on average WooCommerce/Prestashop for 1,000s sku, Magento CE 10s thousands, EE 100s thousands - but we find it a little misleading as factors such as number of stores can make the dynamics change materially, so we find the revenue method more reliable.

Woo commerce is the most popular shopping cart plugin for WordPress and for a good reason. It comes free at first then it is heavily extended with premium plugins that offer advanced functionality. Contains fantastic documentation with instructional videos and tutorials and is straight forward to work with it.

If you are not experienced, I would definitely recommend using Shopify or BigCommerce good solutions, easily manageable and perfect if you want to set up good-looking web stores without any design or coding skills. Opencart has nice features and easily available extensions. I’ve never tried Magento, heard it is an enterprise-level solution mainly. A helpful alternative: mix shoppable products with content. Basically a content commerce/marketing tool - called Styla.

@MadisonW - the ones you mention are sub for sub $200,000 revenue per year stores, Magento CE is for $200,000 to $3million. So if the target is $250,000 revenue per year then Prestashop, Shopify will make it hard work the closer you get - Magento makes it hard work up front but easier to grow - the Styla link is pretty useful - thanks for that.

I have worked with all popular shopping carts such as opencart, shopify, oscommerce, bigcommerce etc etc but lately im hooked to woocommerce and enjoy working on it quite a lot. The reason why i prefer wooCommerce is because wordpress is quite easy to explain my clients and after development they can add products on their own with some help here and there.
