Any Downsides to eBay Global Shipping Program?

I was just asked by a buyer to join the eBay Global Shipping Program.

Having never used it, I'd like to know if anyone here knows of any downsides to the program. For example, is the delivery time extended because of the middleman, any liabilities that are not clear in the Global Shipping Program TOS, etc.

And one other thing, does joining require all international sales to go through the GPS, or is there still a choice?

A friend who has been a member since a year or so before I joined (back when it was known as AuctionWeb) said I should join. So just looking for a bit more feedback.

    I've used it a couple of times and was very satisfied with it. In fact, it is the only way I will ship overseas period.

    In the past when shipped items myself, customers claimed they never received them. I lost money on a couple of transactions because of this.

    With the new program that can't happen.

      Your comment mirrors my friend who also uses it, and that is nice to hear!

      I've had situations in the past where the mailing/shipping time to certain countries was so long that buyers would file a PayPal item not received dispute. The buyer and I worked together as I understood the problem, and everything eventually worked out fine.

      I understand that eBay has buyer protection now to address such things, but seller protection is not usually their concern... hence my concern .

      So that is one of my concerns as I didn't see it addressed in the TOS.

    It's a good thing. Not all countries are included. The buyer protection deal saved me $62 I would have been out on a regular transaction.
