There are 2 Magento hosts that are at the top of any list (Nexcess and Magemojo). I have experience with both and can strongly recommend either. Both are outstanding and both specialize in Magento hosting.

Don't listen to people who suggest that you should use a cheap generic host for Magento. Don't do it. Pay a little extra and use a host that specializes in Magento. Trust me, its worth it.

Magemojo is a VPS (type) host that uses very fast SSD drives. Nexcess uses more traditional servers and drives- but they have dedicated servers and server farms available.

Without knowing more specifics (expected traffic, DB size etc,) its difficult to recommend specific plans. However both of those companies have great support departments that can help you get the right setup

Simply. No. It's not worth the extra expense.

I have a magento store on a shared server for $4/mo. The speed is good, it's fairly optimized, and a good host will increase your hosting to your needs.

EXACTLY as I predicted earlier in this thread - someone suggested a cheap generic host for a Magneto.

The fact that you use a $4 host and get good Magento results is meaningless. You are probably on a server that is under utilized *right now*. That could change at any time and your Magento will suffer.

The only way $4 hosting companies can stay in business is by wildly over subscribing their servers with 100's or even 1000's of accounts on each machine.

Its pure economics. Good luck trying to get any decent tech support for Magento with that kind of plan.

If you are a running a serious eCommerce business you won't use a $4 host for your business....especially a Magento store which is a resource hog.

This comment all the way. As others have echoed in the thread, Magento can run pretty heavy. You're going to want to make sure that you have hosting that specializes in the kind of traffic your store can potentially get.

Downtime can be an arrow to the achilles' heel when you're selling online.

If you are having a huge amount of traffic then i would suggest you to go for dedicated hosting solutions to handle the load.Otherwise you could get Magneto optimized shared hosting solutions like Nexcess.

Magento can be a resource hog, so if you will have 20 stores, you should consider a dedicated server, or at least a VPS. I suggest you go to webhostingtalk.com and read suggestions there. You can also submit a request for quotes and offers from hosts that meet your needs.

If you are going to use it for demo purpose then a dedicated solution is not at all required.

It would be best if you can manage to look around for companies providing SSD Cloud VPS servers. They are best suitable for your Magento Hosting. SSD Cloud VPS servers will provide better performance. VPS.uk.com provides best Cloud based servers.

If not Magento, what would be the best option for an eCommerce?

Magento is an OUTSTANDING platform. However, its a heavy duty system and it not meant to be run on a $4 shared hosting plan.

Some other posters suggest using a VPS and this is often not a good choice for Magento either unless its a high end system. Often VPS hosting uses shared storage systems which are too over loaded for Magento and effect performance.

I'd get a low cost budget VPS for that. Or just use a shared hosting account from any reliable company (for as long as it is for demo purposes).
