What do you guys think of a carousel below the header? I've read two opinions on the topic: one is that it is distracting; the other is that is could showcase some of your products, sales, or just great product-related images. I have one with three images. It is set for 4 second intervals. But, I don't have enough experience with it yet.

Research has consistently shown that these hurt conversions. I would never use them without doing an A/B split test which shows a solid benefit.

The issue I have found is when users are using tablets and smartphones they don't always function correctly or cause interference with the original content therefore I am more in line with saying you should not use a carousel in your theme.

Yeah, I'd skip carousels. Really, anything that slows down the site so that people with slower Internet connections have a hard time viewing is a no-no that works against you. Higher bounce rate, lower time-on-site. Doesn't help you with rankings or conversions.

If you are advertising a special site-wide offer e.g. "free shipping on everything today!" then it would make sense, otherwise I think an offer tailored to the page/category that the user is on would be better.
