Aside from PPC advertising, what can I do? I'm very confused by this aspect of getting into the eCommerce business.

Well, a lot has to do with SEO on your website. Having good keywords, links. You can also create blogs, get involved in forums related to your product, and do social networking.

That said. I have done all these things, including PPC for my fairly new business, but I have a feeling that it's going to take some time. It's going to take time for things to come up and searches and the word to get out. As long as I keep creating every day, and keep focusing on what it is I'm trying to sell, I'm making progress.

Well, traffic is the word of everyone's mouth in any online business and the merchant will be able to manage it in their own ways to build his business a brand in the market. when it comes to getting traffic. Folk imagine that a spanking website + plus SEO will generate this in short order. In fact, it’s pretty hard work nowadays: you need time, money, planning, management & measurement. Although experienced retailers will work this analysis to really drive their sales.
    1. Start with a sales plan
    2. Get the source of traffic, %age of visitors, factors influencing the success
    3. Email marketing
    4. Search engine optimisation/SEO
    5. Pay Per Click advertising (PPC)
    6. Affiliate marketing
    7. Social Media

What works for you best may differ from business to business, but eventually you should try it all and measure. The pace is only constrained by your level of business aspiration, amount of funding and time available to you. Thats it.

Why not Facebook? Build a FB page (instead of FB profile), Insert your ecommerce into the FB page. You can invite your friends to go the FB page.

If you want to speed the process, you can use FB ads for generating traffic toward to the FB page.

You've got to know where your customers are and establish how they might come across your website. In an increasingly noisy online landscape that might be PPC, but more and more quality leads can be found by building a following (if your products are fairly niche). Killer content will get people noticing you but it's incredibly hard work for most and outside of many online sellers' comforts zones.

It can be a case of, 'All of the above' regarding Facebook, Twitter, PPC, blogs etc, but it's hard work and I don't believe there are an magic bullets.

These are the 2 biggest challenge for eCommerce rookies:

    1. Achieving sufficient conversion rates
    2. Getting Enough Traffic

These are difficult tasks even for experienced professionals. That's why most people would be better off starting on eBay or Amazon until they learn the fundamentals of processing orders, sourcing products and dealing with customer service etc.

When selling on eBay/Amazon traffic and conversions are not as much of a concern because for the most part they take care of those areas.

Unless you have previous experience with eCommerce or affiliate marketing it can be a daunting task.

The best lesson I learned is to focus on one traffic source a time. I'll take from a few weeks to a few months to figure out getting quality visits from one traffic source. What traffic source to test first depends on where your audience is. Organic search traffic is a long term solution.

If it's B2B, PPC, Twitter, and linkedin etc are good start options.
If it's B2C, Facebook, blog commenting and forum posts are very effective.

SEO is still the most powerful way to get traffic for free and you really need to invest some time and efforts in the optimization of your site. SEO is not that difficult and if you want to get familiar with it in a nutshell. You can also buy traffic from different sites like SEOclerks.

  • If you're not getting the traffic you need to sell your products and services online, consider these features that are guaranteed to drive online sales through building interest and engagement of the consumer with the brand.

    Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most important ways to drive new business to a website.

    Social Content
One of the best methods for generating traffic and links to your site is to create useful content that others will want to reference.

It's important to track the referrer and entry point to the site for all visits, as well as the number of hits for each individual page. This helps to understand which content is bringing the most users to the site, and what of it is mostly viewed, and mostly purchased.
