    They can still work, but I think most aren't willing to put in all of the effort required to get the site ranked. These tend to be a lot of effort for what may be small commissions. It all depends on the product, the market potential, and the commission.

    If you can get decent commissions then that may cover the effort of driving sales to the site and ranking well, but the Internet is noisier now, and it's definitely harder. One switch of strategy is to make the site 'category' focused and continue to find products that fit the category. That way, you might rank highly over time and attract a better converting visitor.
