Search this forum for ecommerce platform and you'll discover plenty of recommendations. If you're starting out, go the hosted route i.e BigCommerce, Shopify etc - each platform has it's pluses and minuses.

Once you've got a business, you can develop your own platform on open source or proprietary stack but until then, go hosted.

This question is like asking "What is the best car?" The answer totally depends on what your needs are.

There are at least 25 solid, well-supported, widely used carts on available.

Tell us what your objectives are.

Yeah, all one needs is wordpress hosting and you can run your store on free themes and plugins.

Not to mention that paid themes and plugins are good on WP and the level of customizability IMHO better than other hosted solutions

I seriously hate this question. What is the best house? What is the best school? What is the best computer? What is the best route to take? All of these things mean nothing without context.

What is the best school? Law School? Medical School? High School? Tech School? Qualify it.

Same thing with a shopping cart platform. What does it need to do. What are you comfortable doing? Do you have a budget? How big is your store? What characteristics does it need to have? Anyone who answers that question without knowing what you need is just blowing hot air. Answer the following questions and we can give you an actual informed decision about what works best for you...

Do you want self hosted or SAAS? (given what you said, i would suggest another hosted cart like Shopify and it might even be shopify)
    How technical are you?
    How many products?
    How many SKU's?
How many options or option sets?
How many categories and/or subcategories of products do you have?
Do you need the ability to do subscription type business.
Do you need to sell wholesale and retail? How much wholesale functionality do you need?
    Particular payment provider you need?
    US based or worldwide shipping?
    Need full time shipping quotes?
    Need MAP functionality?
What about coupons and discount codes?
Are you dropshipping? Need multi-warehouse functionality?
How much of a third party eco-system do you want?
Are you using a Mac or PC (yes, sometimes it makes a difference).
Do you need high res photos or will standard res photos work just fine?

I work for ecomdash, a multichannel inventory management tool for sellers, and we chose to integrate with the following ecommerce website platforms: Shopify, Zencart, 3cart and Magento (ready this month). These are all really good platforms, with varying levels of complexity and customization (some are more robust than others, but they require a bit more configuration on your part). Hope this helps!

I do not recommend hosted solution. Your business is highly dependent on their business. What if they are out of business, what happen to your business?

There are alot of standalone which are free too if you do not have fancy requirements. You can check-out wordpress plugins or Joomla extensions.

I am not sure this argument is convincing. If you self host do you use a hosting company?

If so then you are still relying on another company. What happens if your hosting company closes or has a disaster?

When your hosting company implodes, you take your nightly offsite backup (you DO have one, right?), upload it to a different company's server, change the DNS on the domain (which is hosted completely separately) and are back up and running in an hour.

Anything less than the ability to do exactly that means you are not adequately prepared to be running your own web-based business.

There lot of free as well as paid ecommerce platforms available in market. So choosing the right one is completely based on your need and some free platforms can not be customized. You could find lot of platforms in this forum, however i would suggest Uniecommerce might be right one for most small business online stores.

Not quite what this thread is about, though "furfilled by Amazon" does sound interesting.

On a more serious note, OpenCart and WooCommerce are the two free options to look into, or at least the ones without a monthly payment to be made.

If you are talking about 1m plus per year business with say 1000 sku's or more then I am inclined to push someone towards Magento. If you are a small start up with a small number of items items then the bigcommerce, shopifies etc. all make good sense. As far as making use of Ebay or Amazon which are both excellent extensions of your business you can certainly install modules in Magento to manage those things very efficiently.

So in choosing the right platform define clearly what your business needs are now and also factor in where you will be in the next few years. Pick a platform that can grow with your business or at least pick one that you can grab your data when you are ready to move onto an enterprise solution.

    Shopify
    Magento
    3dcart

A lot of online sellers swear by Magento, but I think it's important to remember that online selling is about as varied and can be as different as the actual people who are doing the selling.

Magento CAN be a great solution, yes. It absolutely can. But for starting sellers, it can often be a little bit too much. I've heard a lot of experienced sellers refer to it as being straight overkill when it comes to newer sellers without massive inventory or complex listing requirements. Also, Magento is known for being rather technically involved, and while the Community (free) Edition does have its fair share of support-based message boards, there is no official support, which can make things challenging.

    I hope this helps!

It depends. For big business Magento is best. But you have to keep extra money for good hosting. Magento needs VPS at least to run smoothly. I got "A Small Orange" as a good cheap VPS hosting providers for Magento. For small business with less server load you can use OpenCart. Because it is simple to use. Wordpress with Woocommerce is another good selection. Here is one example for magento https://www.goodguysgardening.com/

Such a philosophical & general question like what is the best car or mobile phone. Everything depends on the budget, your business and..taste. I know people who say that Magento is great, but they just can't use it because of the endless investment in development, extensions, paying the developers... So they need sth less complicated. For me Magento is ok. Been working with it for 3 years already and no global problems.

That's just service providers overselling chargeable time and helping put the retailer out of business before they start. We have dropped in small busines Magento sites (ok, only one as we don't work with small business - normally $100,000s to $millions projects) with 1-2day turnaround and with Amazon AWS dual-node Nginx & HHVM the things rank like $multi-million companies. If you're niche Shopify or Prestashop or Woocommerce - otherwise you have no choice but Mangeto as it's the top of the range small business platform. It still only gets you to 200% efficiency compared to Amazon's 1,400% but it a lot better than WooCommerce at 50%. The main problem is service provider overselling and retailer demands - both reduce its efficiency down to ~50% from its starndard 200%.

I found some great looking themes at themeforest for Magento. My product has a lot of variation and during my Magento trail I could not figure out how to add these attributes/variations. I need 5 drop downs and this bogs woo commerce down so much that it will barely run. It's like 1000 variations total. What budget should I assign to have this set up and these basics added?

If I decided to lower my variation to take shortcuts what should I budget to a woo theme and set up?

You will shoot yourself in the foot with WooCommerce in this situation - it's primarily a niche tool and not as scalable as Magento. You can have a Magento install running in a few days, just keep extensions to a handful and absolutely minimal custom code - it's the corporate approach - less is more. With HHVM and dual-node AWS hosting the site will run like a corporate company (HHVM runs Facebook) - Google seems to love multi-node hosting. The above forms the basis of these ultra high efficiency setups which the consultants have let us share with you - https://twitter.com/VanquishCmce/sta...30549214646272 - the strategy will propel your site in to the top 5% of sites at your level - the top 5% of retailers make 50% of all online revenue.

You then get to use the full force of Magento's 200% efficiency which gives you an edge over 95% of your lateral competitors. Normally you allocate 1% of revenue to hosting, 1.5% to consulting and 1% to platform. So you really want to target $100,000 revenue (half of Nano Enterprise which is <$200,000) so $3,500.

No, that's the problem, all small business providers sell time - which means they add unnecessary functionality and reduce efficiency - the faster it's live the more efficient the install as it means it was an experience not time based architecture. The last small business we did on HEIC took 1-2days of our time (although half the time was $1,250 extra of custom functionality) and 2wks elapsed time - retailers are quite slow collating data.

We stopped doing small business installs - however just posted this for pricing to provide a guide - https://twitter.com/Serpyre/status/529812050336546819 - you can try contacting Acornia as we know they also work with the same consultants so should have access to the same setup.

We'll add a caveat to that last statement. Small business is low efficiency so is time based, as they are squeezed by larger corporates they demand more changes which requires more time - however when a business is in crisis the key is to become simpler (as opposed to cost cutting) as it increases efficiency.

We have worked with one small business who were starting to be squeezed by an 800% efficiency corporate competitor, however they just didn’t want to grow at anything other than a snails pace using 250% efficiency, so we all had to drop them. To date we have not yet come across any small business that wants/needs to grow using high efficiency and does not put demands on our time.

We always believe you install and let the business run it themselves which is against the small business ethos. Most are running a small business (sub 200% efficiency) for revenue, prestige and flexibility however it only becomes interesting for us above 500%+ efficiency hence why we don’t work with small business. Now if a small business had the desire to generate rapid growth with HEIC to propel themselves out of small business in to mid-market 500%+ efficiency with $500,000+ revenue per employee then it becomes more interesting.

Alright chaps, you're on you own from here on out - our job is done. The collapse is now in full swing - it will complete in around 12-18mths and will take out many established small business retailers and small business service providers. Startups won't get out of the starting gate.

As a retailer you absolutely have to target growth of 20-50% YoY from here on out otherwise you will become one of the statistics. The established retailers and small business providers are now fighting for survival and they will play dirty to retain their revenue.

Even Magento & eBay employees are now contacting us directly they are so worried about service provider free high growth strategies. We're off back to trading and our own commerce sites so will wait for the dust to settle around here - honestly hope some of you make it through because if you do you will gain 7-10x the customers from the failing retailers.

I am into the business of developing CMS extensions and customized e-stores for different platforms like Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, OpenCart etc. Based on my experience I recommend using Magento, however it requires more technical know-how to get started with Magento. Feel free to touch base if you need any extension for Magento.

In the last 4 years i used "CubeCart v4" but they don't support it anymore i think, and is not mobile ready, so you have to buy v5. But is easy to use the v4 version.

There are loads of options to take. There are loads of free platforms to take such as woocommerce, and Wordpress ecommerce plugins and even at Weebly. However, if you are really serious about e-commerce and aiming for a bigger business then I recommend a 'paid' one e.g. Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce, etc.

Magento or Woocommerce is ok. But Woocommerce is usually for small business and Magento is for big one. So it's up to your company's size

Agree with so many people above. These websites are hard to be compared, but I think the one which you like most is the best site for you.

Any way, the appropriate is the best.

I've always liked Wordpress for smaller sites. Once my business expanded i had to re-design my site.
