Hi All,

I'm just wondering, after reading a lot of threads in here about building ecommerce sites...

Why do people go for "Wordpress for ecommerce" when they can go for Prestashop???!!

I just don't get it. Prestashop is FREE as well. And offers you EVERYTHING you need to start a professional ecommerce website.

I have worked for a startup web design company in the past, building websites for costumers, a number of which were ecommerce websites. My mind blew up when I found out this startup was also using Wordpress to build ecommerce websites (and charging $XX,XXX for it)!

I mean yea, I know wordpress is the most widespread free CMS that even dumb Joe can work with, but this is not a platform you want to use for your serious and robust ecommerce business.

If you can't go for the high-end ecommerce platforms (magento, shopify, oscommerce, etc...), and you don't have to if you're still small, then Prestashop is just fine. And they have a much better online forum to get help from their community, than wordpress has.

I came across Prestashop in 2010, and ever since I kind of fell in love with it. So please, do yourself a favor, if you know nothing about Prestashop, download it, install it, play with it for some time until you grasp all the power it has to offer. Only then can you decide if you still prefer Wordpress

I prefer Wordpress. You prefer Prestashop. Simple as that. People use what they like and are comfortable with.

For me it's got to be the platform that allows me to provide the best user experience for my customers. I LOVE Wordpress and if I were building smaller niche sites I'd jump on it in an instant. However, when I look at my major competitors, across the board every one of them is using a professional platform ((magento, shopify, oscommerce, etc...) or something they've had designed for them.

I feel that I really have no alternative but to do the same, though I'm not happy about it. If you're gonna try to run with the big dogs you've got to play the part.

Well, there is your answer. If you already have a serious and robust ecommerce business, you would be using a solution custom built for you and not one of the Prestashop, WP, Shopify, Magento etc.

I use Wordpress. I believe it is the most all around customizable solution for a start-up ecommerce business. This is after I have burnt my fingers with magento & shopify. They are good in some areas, but there always seem to be one area or another which comes up as non-customizable. For example, with magento I found out it did not support the payment solutions I wanted, shopify didn't support basic stuff such as layered navigation.

Unfortunately its just laziness. Instead of taking the time to learn something new, that is more robust and is designed around what you are trying to do, they stick with what is easy. I like wordpress, like it a lot, but one thing I have discovered with wordpress users, wordpress is their hammer and everything in the world is a nail.

I have even fallen into this trap and as I have used other CMS's I have come to appreciate wordpress but I have also come to appreciate what these other CMS's can really provide.

Whether it be Drupal, Magento, Prestashop or Opencart, they all have pros over wordpress (and wordpress has its pros as well) but most will never discover what it is.

The biggest worry I have right now is the direction wordpress is going. They are accepting a lot of VC funding which is going to put them at odds with the open source community as they look to monetize things further.

      Did you try Prestashop?
Prestashop is to ecommerce what Wordpress is to blogging... Let me put it that way for you, WP lovers...
