A noob at this but after some pretty heavy research on one of my niches I have found one that is focused on a niche pet that is rapidly becoming more popular. The search traffic for the primary kwp's is over 100k a month with very low competition. Question is though can I monetize this and if so how? I'd like to build a content driven authority/blog type site.

I believe I can drive traffic through strong content creation and the plus side is these pets owners are highly passionate about their pets and typically have higher levels of discretionary income as ownership of these pets is quite expensive but can I monetize this? I'd like to sell product but most of the products would be stuff you could find at most retailers. Thoughts?

Every pet product, or rather every thing is found in retail stores but stuff are sold online too. The purchasing power of people online have increased tremendously, you needn't worry about monetizing your site with pet products.

As you said that you will focus on creating strong content, then sell pet products, pet foods, sell advertising space on your blog to other bloggers in your niche when your site starts getting decent traffic, start a membership site in the future when you have build a list - a site that discusses about pet problems and real solutions to their problems, get expert opinions once a week and so on.

Of course, you can also monetize the site through AdSense ads.

And since your target audience is people with higher levels of discretionary income, selling them products won't be a issue at all with targeted marketing.

I would consider creating a info product in a pet niche. These kinds of sites are actually pretty popular and proven to bring in some coin. I have seen more than one case study for breed-specific sites that create and sell training, nutrition, and care related info products specific to that breed.

Create the product, grow a list of email subscribers, and promote the product to that list. You can also do the affiliate product sales as mentioned above, but I think the info products could be your best sellers.

Look on Clickbank for inspiration. There are lots of pet related info products there.
