Hi all, I was hoping that someone could please help me with another newbie question.

I am currently uploading products to my new Magneto ecommerce store, the issue I have is that I have 1000's of products to upload. I understand through searching this forum that if I use manufacturers description for products, as long as the content isn't spammy, the site wont be penalized, it just wont rank for the keywords mentioned.

As writing unique content for each product will take forever (especially if I am writing 300-500 word descriptions), am I ok using manufacturers descriptions, uploading the site and then re-writing new descriptions for products on a daily basis? I will begin by targeting the products that are related to the keywords that I wish to rank for.

When searching for keywords on Google, the sites that rank the highest all seem to use the manufacturers descriptions. In time I do want every product to have its own unique description.

Thank you in advance.

Its easy to forget that the actual purpose of the product description is to describe the product for your customers and NOT for SEO rank. SEO rank is an extra benefit of having good descriptions but its not the main reason you do it.

Also I am not convinced that every product must have unique content. Your research in your own niche confirms this.

In an ideal situation you would have a team of talented copywriters churning 100's out amazing and unique product descriptions. However sometimes that's not possible and the manufacturer text works just fine.

    Hey Sean,

Here's a step-by-step guide that shows you how to write a search engine friendly product description - How To Write Product Descriptions For Humans And SEO - Small Revolution

It will literally teach a freelance writer how to do the work for you, if you don't want to do it yourself.

To get 500+ product descriptions re-written we use an article spinner. We use it to initially 'spin' the manufacturer's content. This mixes up the description enough that it is different. And then we have a content writer go over the copy and make it awesome.

That's just a little trick we use to get a massive amount of data changed.

If you have less than 100 products then you'll just need to sit down and do each one.

I know that it seems like a pain to sit down and write all the product descriptions, but please believe that it is worth the effort. Each product page is its own sales page - incredibly important.

We consistently rank in the top 3 positions in Google AU for our most competitive keyword, and I'm pretty sure it's just because we created a lot of content for the product.

Anyway, hopefully that how-to guide will get you started on the right track.

    All the best,
    Katrina

Thank you all for your comments.

To begin with I will start by spinning the manufacturers descriptions, this should do the trick considering my competitors are all using the same descriptions. Once the site is uploaded I will then go through the site updating content on a regular basis.

    Thanks again

Think of an e-commerce business as any other type of brick and mortar store. You will have products that get discontinued, new products, etc. Your products are constantly in a state of flux. There is no good sense in trying to SEO your product detail pages.

The onpage SEO work should be done on your main description page for each manufacturer. Then make sure to have a great internal linking structure to make sure every page is linked to.

You need to focus on a scaleable way of adding, removing, and modifying your thousands of products. Don't worry about the content being the same. Focus on the user experience. Build a site that you (as a user) would be able to go to and figure out how to easily buy a product and have enough information to make that decision.

I wouldn't worry too much about it at first, since you have so many products. Having unique descriptions will help you in the long run though, both in the SERPs and in conversions. With that many products I would focus on the top selling products and work my way down. Since it's a new site, just try to guess what your top products would be. And as already suggested, manufacturer pages, and product category pages are great places to create unique content and link to products.
