Does anyone engage in import from Mexico?

How do the landing costs compare vs. Asian markets?

I suspect the product cost advantage is in Asia but shipping/import cost are obviously at an advantage from Mexico (I live in Texas). How does all this flush out to landing costs, apples to apples? Curious if anyone has experience with this, thanks.

Do you have the dimensions and weight of the packages? You can always check with UPS, FedEx, DHL, US Mail, etc. and have them quote you the shipping + duties (if any).

If you have a fast selling product, maybe Mexico is best option because you can get the product much faster. Until you have enough money to buy a container from China and send it by sea, but in the meantime, find the closest supplier that can keep your inventory filled ASAP.

Depending on what products you are buying, Mexico can be a great option.

If you are shipping container loads, China prices will usually beat those from Mexico. I am referring to total landed cost.

You won't really be able to get a good idea until you get a quote from a manufacturer in Mexico, get the shipping details and a quote for the freight. As in China, Mexican suppliers will often have good deals with freight companies, so it is worth asking the supplier for a door to door delivery price.

There are many keen small exporters in Mexico, but finding them is not as easy as it is in many other countries. Also as neighbors of the US, many of them have come to believe that north of the border is Eldorado so they expect huge orders - container loads at least. In practice they will negotiate smaller orders.

I had trouble finding sources in Mexico and the Dominican Republic and/or 'duty free' Latin American countries. If I did their MOQ's were very high.

MOQs are often just for the purpose of deterring newbies.

It is possible to get most manufacturers to supply much smaller orders if you approach them the right way. If they are used to dealing with huge orders from large corporations they may not be approachable on this issue, but generally it is not a problem.
