New guy, need help please

Hey all,

So here is my story: I'm a law school student, 1L, and the school does not allow me to have a job. For about 3 years now my roommate has shown me that he makes good secondary income by operating a dropship store. He builds his own sites and is way more technical than I am. However I have started making my own site on Wix but my biggest issue is trying to find a dropship supplier. I have tried searching online but so many of them seem bogus and others want money, which is what I'm short on. I know it's possible to find good ones and make decent money but I do not know how.

Now that I have said that, let me clarify that I am NOT trying to get your personal supplier nor am I trying to take your trade secrets. I am simply looking for some help in learning the process of finding a supplier. Any help you can provide me is very much appreciated! Keep in mind that I am not trying for 10k/month or anything crazy, I'm just looking to stay afloat financially. The bay area is expensive!!!

Given the potential need for privacy in this situation, I'm more than happy to pm.

    Hey there James. I think your plan of attack must be to first identify the niche you want to enter. Then figure out what kinds of products you want to sell within that niche. Figure out what specific products you want to sell, then, and only then, start looking for companies that manufacture, drop-ship or supply those specific products.

    Don't go through some generic supplier directory service or anything like that. You'll only shrink your margins. And there is no need to pay a service in order to find products. You just have to Google-dig a little. Good luck!

      Thank you all very much for your replies! I never even considered some of the options suggested, like fiverr, and will take all into consideration. Like I said, I am new to the ecommerce world and you all were very kind and informative.

      -Action Man/Jim: Thank you! No he will not allow to use the same drop shipper nor the same niche for fear of competition. I never knew it was that time consuming! So thank you for your recommendations, I will check them all out!

      -RunMarty: Thank you for the suggestion, I never considered just buying the items myself! I will look into that, I'm sure there are records of what is popular on those sites.

      -karina35, sbucciarel, ShoppingSignals: All three of you seem to have the same point; I need to know where I want to go before I start looking for it! It's a very good point and in short I have no idea. Taking things into consideration like returns, poor reviews, and keeping the price point low all seem to eliminate a lot of potential categories. However, I was considering building on Wix and possibly selling clothing or perhaps electronics.

    Hi, will your mate not allow you to copy what he does if he is making money?

    Drop-shipping is involved, and not my first choice for fast money.

    Lots of students have skills they can sell on sites like https://www.fiverr.com/

    don't let the five dollars throw you they get repeat business, and make some good money and once established with a client get better offers.

    Internet marketing takes time to build, you need quick money I think

    I suggest offering your abilities around the internet sites that are looking for your skills, try

    https://www.odesk.com for example

    As a law student you must have advanced writing skills and be good at english, thats in big demand even by warriors here--go to the warriors for hire section, you might be amazed, good content gets sites high on Google, people will pay for that, trust me!

      I agree here. Dropshipping requires filling orders, checking prices, ... So on. It is time consuming. If your thinking eBay or Amazon selling is the way go, then I would suggest buying items used to sale on Ebay or Amazoon and ship yourself. This allows you more control over your time.

    If you want to dropship - which I am not a huge fan of (even though I operated a very successful dropship business on eBay before wholesaling/importing) ShoppingSignals had it right - to a point.

    Yes, you need to identify a niche - but identifying one isn't just thinking of an idea and finding suppliers for it.

    You need to look at specific metrics in order to give you the BEST niche.

    First, you need to make sure you're looking for appropriate demand. Enough to prove that people WANT to find you, and 2, the demand isn't so high you bump into serious competition.

    Second, you need to make sure that your idea HAS manageable competition because 'being able to find you' is important.

    Third, you need to make sure your niche has some sort of commercial intention - meaning, when people look for my item (search query) are they looking to buy? Are they looking to learn?

    Making sure people actually pay when advertising ad spend justifies the margins and volume will do wonders.

    Having all of the aligned will help you out more.

    Remember - have NUMBERS make your decisions - nothing else.

      Yeah totally agree on this. Identifying that is a huge thing to overcome. Once you have this you can really focus.

    hi, am not really a fan to drop ship but u can make money online in diverse ways, since you are a law student, i will advise you to start simple before going big, by just look for numerous links to traffic to their web page and they will give you reward.

    I would start out drop shipping as it's inexpensive to do so but over time, I would start sourcing items from the wholesaler.

      This seems to be the mindset of people that are very successful at dropshipping.

      They always think: "Where does my dropshipper get this item?!"

      You then find a wholesaler.

      However - then you start thinking: "Where does my wholesaler get the items?!"

      That many times leads you to a manufacturer.

      Even then, you can think: "Would it be cheaper to make this myself?!"

      The answer to that - many times - is.... well, no.

      That is the food chain - and the mindset of the very successful.
