Can you make a living on other ecommerce sites besides Amazon, Craigslist, and Ebay?

I am talking about consistent daily sales with the smaller ones:

ecrater
ebiz
barnesandnoble.com
bonanza
ebid
sears
hpbmarketplace
and a whole list of others....

I am getting only a few sales with ebay per week. So my guess is that with these smaller sites, I will only get fewer sales.

It totally depends on what you are selling and how you are marketing them. Just having your stuff on any site won't necessarily bring you sales. You still need to do marketing, good descriptions, and help drive people to your products.

Yes, you need to promote your business in a huge plateform.

  • Of course you can, but I don't usually recommend using these as a primary source of information. I'd rather increase my footprint rather than stick with one.

HOWEVER, a big downside to selling on these other platforms is that the research isn't always intuitive or available.

You need to know HOW MUCH the item will sell for, and what STRATEGY most effectively sells the product.

In addition, you have to be able to calculate your profit PRIOR to selling the item because you don't want to lose money per transaction and then wonder why that happened.

Market values per site aren't always the same as that site's traffic behavior is always different.

These are strategies I've taught, and more importantly, implemented for years.

    Hey Bigfoot12,

I feel it is totally possible with the right marketing and product. I think with the proper goals put in place you could succeed, yes maybe small at first but would have to start somewhere.

What type of products were you looking to do?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Like others have said, if you want to have your own ecommerce site (which I think is a great idea), you're going to have to put in far more marketing efforts than you would have to on Amazon or eBay. But, there is room for more creativity (no to mention leniency) when creating images and product descriptions for your listings.

    Good luck to you,

The quick answer to your question is yes, but what's really important to understand is that it's not eBay's fault that you're not making the sales that you want to be making.

And this is great news! Because it means there are things that you can do to increase the sales you're already getting on eBay.

I'd start with taking a real good look at the way you're marketing and positioning your inventory on eBay. On a third-party marketplace like that one, things like product descriptions are among the best ways to get your inventory to stand out if you're not getting the sales you think you should be getting.

It is possible, but why are you avoiding the biggest marketplaces on the internet?

Amazon is bigger than the next 5 retail competition combined.

Yes, but I believe for the effort, you time and money is better invested in creating your own site and running your own ad platform. I have several clothing lines I control the sales for, whereas sales on eBay, Amazon, and other smaller sites were pretty much non-existant. When I created my own sites, my ROI is higher, my sales numbers are higher, defect/return rates are lower, and my marketing budget is less than the cost of fees on the big 2 at my current amount of sales.

Sellers sold niche clothing or clothing with a general synergetic style to them but weren't branded.

    Hi Bigfoot12
I am sure you can make you can make a living from places like ebay, amazon etc. There are seveal courses I have seen available, though I can't think of one at the moment. Saying this I don't think you'd make a forune on amazon has I believe there commissions are quite low.

However there are some good site out there where you could make a fair amount of money ie ClickBank but really depends on the niche. I have recently came across what I believ to be the Biz Opp of 2014. If you or anyone are interested feel free to email me and I can give further details.

I have found that since Amazon has taken over my sales have gone down on my websites were I try to buy wholesale and ship out, and unless you have your own product line it's difficult to sell on Amazon because you will be undercut by the manufacturer. We have are own product that we sell on Amazon and it does fairly well us.

I think you are better concentrating your efforts on ebay. Get the right pricing structure, get an ebay shop and fill it with as much diverse stuff as possible. You can subscribe to the middle shop for £60 per month and get 1200 free listings. If you only sell 10% of these listings per month thats 120 sales. You will probably achieve a lot more than 10%.
Ebid is a waste of time I subscribed to that one and I haven't had any sales at all. Strange when you consider I turnover £100,000 + on ebay and nothing on ebid !! That tells you the site is not that popular.
Regardless what other people on here say, your own website is also a poor option. Been there and done that. I buy my supplies off regular suppliers every month and I always buy from their ebay shop rather than their website. And this is something a lot of people do. They feel more comfortable buying through ebay. Lets face it would you buy from a website that you haven't heard from before or buy from them on ebay where you can see there feedback score.
The fees are a problem with ebay but if you look at what you get - £60 a month with 1200 free listings - this gives you definite coverage and sales if your products are priced correctly. Ebay does all the marketing for you. I don't mind the final fees because you cost that in to your price anyway.
