Hi all,

I have a website that gets a good amount of traffic - 100,000 uniques per month and around 250,000 page views.

Until now, I haven't put any effort into building a list beyond having a simple sign-up box in my sidebar and after each post.

I only have 500 subscribers. And I don't email them often.

I have an ebook, which I've been selling for a few dollars. This doesn't sell a lot and is only earning me around $15 per month.

As an experiment, I've now offered that ebook for free when you sign up to my list. I've read about many other people doing this and - while I have my concerns about the quality of data it helps to build - I thought I'd give it a try.

My problem is - I don't know what I'll do with a list once I have it!

As I understand it, you're not allowed to put Amazon affiliate links in emails. Though I guess I could create a page about a product and link to that from the email?

What else could I do? I don't have any other products to sell and all the rest of my revenue comes from Adsense.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't have a product to sell, you can promote products of affiliate program to your own list.

If Amazon doesn't allow it, looking for other affiliate programs then read their TOS.

Yes, you promote other affiliate products to your list. Try Clickband or JVZoo for starters.

List building is THE most important thing you can do! The reasons:

      1. Each list can be separated into their interests. You can target products.
      2. The REAL push button profits. Once you have a responsive list with enough people (this is key), you can make money by sending an email promoting a product. If they've bought once, they'll buy again.
      3. Generic traffic is just that, but much of it is probably cold traffic and new people. A list can generate recurring income for a long time.
      4. It's what all businesses do. They keep a list of buyers and once something new comes out, many of those same buyers will purchase again, and again, and again. The more buyers you have on your list, the more money you'll make.

    Bill Gates.

300 million years ago - translation: 1980s - Bill visited IBM. Bill thought it was a great idea to build something once, in this case a piece of software, and sell it a billion times. IBM disagreed. Conversely, they believed it was better to build a billion somethings and sell each one. Turned out they were wrong.

The business principles behind a List are similar to those espoused by Bill, who knew that not only could he make something once and duplicate it and sell it a billion times, but that he could sell more than once to the same consumer. If you own a website without a facility to capture consumers, chances are you're selling to them only once. Own a website that captures emails and, in theory, you can sell to the same consumer an infinite number of times.

    You're not.

But that doesn't mean you can necessarily earn anything worth talking about, as an Amazon affiliate, without "doing email marketing" (even without the links to the products in the emails).

You are doing really well if your getting that amount of traffic to your website.

What niche is your website in?

To generate a bit of extra income, you could if you don't already have it, is to insert some affiliate links, related to your product in your eBook.

Also, when people download your eBook, whether they pay for it or get it for free, your thank you page is the next place to gain a bit of extra income. Gather 3 or 4 affiliate products targeted to your niche and place there banners on there.

Also, on your first email, after they have received the eBook, you could put something like

    "P.S.
Check out this great offer ===> Click Here"
Then insert a link to a cpa offer or another affiliate offer.

As for your concerns about writing to your list, it really depends on the niche and how much value you can provide on a consistent basis. Try just sending questions to your list and encourage them to ask you questions, it's all about engagement. And then follow up based on their queries.

    Best of luck.

The general advantage of a list is that when someone visits your website, that's usually the only time they'll ever come in contact with you. If you capture that potential customer in your list, you can contact potential customers many times instead of only once during that single visit they made.

This is almost always more profitable in the long run than not building a list. Also, having a list facilitates having a more stable business and income stream.

Also, making sales to past customers is easier than acquiring a new customer. They are simply less skeptical, because they already have some familiarity with you (given that their past experiences with you were positive in their mind).

You can also mail your list for a lower cost than it costs to advertise, so making sales to your list has higher profits overall.

It's worth noting that having a list is especially important for anything with a longer sales cycle. For something cheap, straight-forward, and immediate, the sales cycle is essentially 0 days. They'd be prepared to buy it now give it's something they want. For things that are expensive, or more complex like selling consulting, round-the-world tours, or high-end manufacturing equipment would have a much longer sales cycle. Many things taking months or years before most buyers would be ready to buy in some cases.

All products can be evaluated in this way; based on how long it usually takes before a customer would be ready to make a purchase. It also depends on the quality of the initial lead. For example, search engine traffic is often a 4-6/10 in terms of being warmed up enough to purchase more expensive consulting. When they need to be an 8/10 or better before they'd actually buy it. Indeed, any coach or consultant will no doubt find that the people buying their higher-end services are almost always those who've been on their list for at least six months or more.

It's worth noting the sales cycle of your products. If it's long, you'll make almost no sales without a back-end strategy (an e-mail autoresponder list being one example of a follow up method). There are also markets with an extremely short sales cycle. Essentially, they'll either buy in a specific time window or they never will again afterward.

Overall, a list is almost always worthwhile to build over not building one. It tends to have far better profits overall. But do keep in mind the above when you're evaluating your approach to doing so.

    Thanks all!

It's great to see such enthusiasm for list building! I figured it was probably worth sacrificing the measly $15/month the ebook was making in order to build a list, but your replies have reassured me that this is the right decision. That is as long as I can build the list to a decent size and communicate with my subscribers effectively!

I'll look into other affiliate products. To be honest, I have some concerns about the quality of some of the products on sites like JVZoo. But if I can find something that I honestly believe is worth buying then I'd happily promote it to my audience!

amitdave - Thanks for your reply - I'm glad you think I'm doing well! I don't want to be too specific about my site in the forum. But it's a pet care site that I've built up over the last 18 months or so.

    Hi Adam,

Looks like you've been able to accomplish a lot and tap into a strong audience with your site!

Congratulations on everything you've achieved so far.

Since you're already a product creator, I think a list would be especially valuable to you.

You already have an audience, they already have specific needs you can help them with, and having a list will give you the chance to go to them directly for anything you may need like ideas, suggestions, feedback, and info that you can use as inspiration for more products.

Not only does that help you help them more efficiently, it allows you to create products that will be exactly what your audience is wanting, needing, and looking for. You will have customers already "lined up" ready to buy when you release those products.

Building a list of targeted and engaged fans who are already familiar with you and look to you for info is an amazing source of buyer traffic.

Continue to grow your list, build a relationship by engaging with them regularly, and you will definitely see your sales and revenue increase over time.

Also, instead of giving the ebook as an immediate download, you have the option of turning your ebook into an ecourse and setting it up in an auto responder over 7 days or so, and then provide a complimentary upsell option. That way, the email series for your auto responder is for the most part already done.

You should already be familiar with other sites in your niche- they would be good partners for you if they also build lists. They may have good products you can promote to your list, and if you promote their products and build a relationship with them, there's a good chance that they will promote you too. Guest posting on their sites is a great way to get traffic to your squeeze page, and interviewing them is a good way to get material for promotion or to sell in a future product.

One thing that most seasoned vets in the IM world can agree on is the long term value of a targeted list of engaged fans. You can be sure you're making a good move if you head in this direction.

    Wishing you the best!

Maybe you could ask your list what problems/ struggles they are experiencing in their business and find clickbank or jvzoo products that will solve that pain ==> in return you can make some money

Your list is the most important thing you can build online. The fact that you have solid traffic to your website is a sign that you have learned some solid skills online,,,,which is definitely a good thing.

Keep the success you have now with your website and build your list as well. You will want to then find out what your list needs the most and provide valuable information that will help them. You are basically doing this already with your site it sounds like.

I saw the power of a list some time back. I was amazed at how a person can make substantial money writing a blast email to subscribers promoting a solid product and help those people at the same time.

You also sometimes will have to promote a product for a while to let subscribers have some time to decide if its right for them. They (we) don't always buy the first time we see something.

Work at taking care of your list. Each subscriber is a person with goals in mind and if you can help them and they become a customer, that relationship has a lifetime value. Online or offline the principle is the same. You buy from solid businesses and owners that you trust. So do other people.

Your list becomes your online store with regular customers and you keep them by providing consistent value to them, and not constantly selling to them. I am on a couple of lists and stay on them because of the value I get from them.

I have become somewhat passionate about building a list. Especially in this economy where you have to create your own financial future and retirement plan.

      This.

It relates to the difference between building a genuine, asset-based business and just "creating a job for yourself".

The list is the real money maker that works over and over again. I am in the process of list building now with only about 2000 subscribers and I see a lot of potential and am already making money with the list.

    Why build a list?

Would you rather get 100 visits to a website, not have a list to capture their email, and lose them forever?

Or get 100 visitors, get a bunch of them onto your list, and be able to make money from them time and time again?

    That should answer your question.

Thanks everyone. I brought in 15 subscribers yesterday (compared to one or two at most usually) so the eBook is clearly working and my list is growing a lot more quickly than it was before.

And I think there's more I could do to increase sign-ups further with better sign-up box placement, etc.

    Thanks again!

    Hi,

There's one problem you need to rectify right away.

You see I'm guessing that most of these subscribers may have forgotten
who you are and why they joined your list in the first place.

If you allow your lists to cold and unresponsive you'll lose out
    to the competition.

So email your lists as often as you can once you get them onto your list.

Also it is far better that you look at selling your own products too in the
    near future.

    Don't know how?

Try creating content for just 30 minutes per day and by the end of the month
you'll have lot's of content you can dip into to turn into a product.

Then you'll stand a far better chance of making more revenues from your lists
because they joined your LIST to hear about you.

So it'll be much easier to sell them products that you own rather than affiliate
    ones alone.

    All the best,

    Gavin

Everyone assumes that you must build an email subscription list to be successful. However clearly in your case you have built your success around visitor traffic there is absolutely nothing wrong with this.

The only observation that I would make is that you could be missing out on upselling opportunities for example selling additional products or services or missing out on the revenue from solo advertising.

Congratulation on what you have already been able to do. I would echo Gavin in that you should get in touch with your list and build some type of relationship with them, let them get to know you and don't end up with a cold dead list. You will do great!

Building a list can be extremely detrimental to the growth and profitability of your business. You can build a list full of prospects and buyers. Each of these lists can turn out to be in your favor.

You can sell the clicks to these lists as well as promote offers that you create. This can create a dramatic increase in profit for your website. Just a thought. The potential of consistent traffic is substantial and hopefully you take advantage of the traffic you already acquire!

    Cheers!

According to my opinion it is highly recommend to you that you must try to increase your subscribers and save their data and offer them some affiliate products. Email them regularly and make your affiliate product page and promote the products of all affiliate sites that you have joined. Try JVzoo,Click bank,eBay,Amazon,Walmart and many others. Promote affiliate products according to your traffic of website that you already have. It is a very wonderful opportunity to make huge income every month. Also design your thank you page and promote some more affiliate products on it.

Since you said most of your earning comes from adsense, why don't you use your list to drive traffic to your pages? The more traffic you get, the higher probability it generates of more clicks. So you can benefit like that.
As others said, you can promote products too.

Email marketing is one of the best marketing tools on the web dude I am sure you'll find something that suits you
