Convincing subscribers to hit the unsubscribe rather than spam button

How do you ensure that your subscribers click the unsubscribe link rather than taking the lazy way out and clicking on the spam button in the email box to unsubscribe?

Of course, you would rather people not unsubscribe. However, there will be times when this is going to happen. And, if enough of your subscribers hit that SPAM button, you're going to get in trouble with your host company as they will assume you were actually spamming, even though these people opted into your email list.

One of my ideas for fixing this problem is to put the unsubscribe link a little closer to the PS in the email or simply stating in the header of the email that if the person is no longer interested in your emails, they can simply click the link to unsubscribe.

What's your best technique for handing this situation?

I remind people semi-regularly (in the opening paragraph of emails) that there's always an "unsubscribe" link at the end, if they ever change their minds about hearing from me.

The longer you stick with a decent autoresponder service (and the more lists, and subscribers, you have there) the more you build a relationship with them, one way and another, and the less likely there are to be really adverse consequences for the occasional mishap.

It perhaps doesn't say so anywhere, as openly as this, but the reality is that people offering such services - with which the behavior of the few affects the many - tend to "know their customer" fairly well. They have to.

    There is no problem.

Some folk will unsubscribe. So what.

    Why is that a problem?

His problem is not that people are going to hit the unsubscribe button. He wants them to hit 'unsubscribe' instead of categorizing his Emails as spam. I think you misunderstood him.

After all these years I got my first Complaint (people pushing Spam button) last week. It kind of stunned me at first.

Just never had it happen ( at least with any of my Broadcasts, Follow Ups not sure) so I was thrown off guard for a second .

It stings sometimes if this happens as you know your content was perfectly acceptable to that same person the week before. I just think the person hitting the spam button is being lazy, not really taking time to unsubscribe and so it's more of a convenience for them. Maybe Gmail should use more caution about allowing that spam button to be used for emails that were formerly whitelisted or allowed in the main email box.

I do it periodically in the opening paragraph. Sometimes in front of something that's an obvious plug. Here's a good article on why you need to routinely ask people to leave your list ;-)

Put a bar at the top of the email that looks completely different from the email. Put something like "REPORT AS SPAM HERE" then have it go to your unsub link

people get lazy all the time.

    That happens.

If there's any way can get people to click unsubscribe instead of spam, I'd be very interested in it.
