2 basic questions about signup forms for blog

1.Should I ask for names or only for emails? Or one form only for email and another for name and email?
2.After how many seconds should signup form pops up? I was thinking about after 3-5 minutes, yes minutes, because of the reader's interest in the content, he is more likely to subscribe, isn't he? Should I set couple of minutes or just go with the seconds?

Without knowing your niche and your target market, almost impossible to answer those questions. Or maybe isn't, here is the best answer for any marketing question - test it.

As a general rule of thumb, the more information you asked for your prospects to enter, the lower response will be. However, another side of the same token is that quality of those leads will be higher.

If they are willing to enter more information, that means they are really interested in whatever lead magnet you are offering in exchange for their email addresses.

In IM niche, email address only will provide the best landing page conversion rate.

You can have sign up form in a blog as a static form, not as a pop up only. Personally, I have both but leading to two different lead magnets. My pop up activates after 10 seconds

You can do pop up after few seconds, or on exit. I know it sounds annoying, I was resisting the idea of doing pop ups for long time, but you will get more leads with it for sure.

My niche is Business Leadership with personal growth and market are mainly young people who aren't satisfied with the current life, want to improve in the areas they are passionate and of course lead people around them.
My plan is that I am going to promote my articles through the emails and maybe some reviews with affiliate links.
So, you are saying that I should go with seconds when it comes to pop-ups.
Ok, I will also require First name from readers.

Well i haven't seen any succesful blog that doesn't use popups, so i assume it's not such a bad thing. (even though i don't use them myself)...

I guess you'll need to test that out and see how that goes for yourself. If you rely on google traffic then i think it's a good idea, because you could lose a lot of business with every update, and if you have a list of thousands of subscribers that won't kill your business...

I've come back to add the post I made above, last night, because I've been thinking some more about what you said, above.

I think it's an interesting idea, and perhaps a much better idea than an "exit pop-up" or a "fast" one. If you display your pop-up after minutes, rather than seconds, I think you're going to minimize the risk of annoying anyone with it, because people who have already stayed "that long" probably already like the site and find it interesting, and so on. So I think it's definitely interesting and perhaps a good idea to test it ... but I think 3-5 minutes is too long. ("There's no pleasing some people!"). What about 2 minutes?

(As with all these things, the nearest to a "right answer" is to test and discover for yourself what works well, but that isn't always as easy as it sounds, and you still have to decide what to test, of course!).

      Ok, thank you Alexa!
So, you are saying that I shouldn't require Name?
I will test it! 1-2 months seconds and 1-2 months 2 minutes.

    Tony,

I would certainly test with and without the name to see which has better results for you. I have typically just been capturing email address those. That's the least that you need and it's barriers to get someone on your list.

As for the pop up, there are lot's of sites (even BIG sites) that use pop-ups. I think every niche and set of visitors are going to respond differently though. Again, you will probably want to test it.

Try a pop up and see how many subscribers you get. Tweak a couple settings on the pop up itself to see how it affects the number of subscribers. Try a couple different intervals before the pop-up comes up.

There are a lot of different variables. So many that you can probably test and tweak too much. Make sure you don't spend all of your time on that.

I think the best best is that you only collect emails. If I am a buyer I would not like to share my name anywhere. If your webpage impresses me then. I'll definitely give you my email though. The lesser you information you ask your readers, the better.

I guess you should set it for minutes. Perhaps either two minutes, or perhaps I saw something that I liked on one blog. They give you a popup just when you click back or close. That may work too.

Its always trial and error. Try different things and see what works best!

I would say use just email submit instead of a name and email and I would stick bringing up the pop after about 3 minutes offering a free gift in it. If I am reading through a blog and a pop up comes on right away I would be kind of annoyed and probably leave because I am trying read through the blog to see what it's all about and before I get a chance the pop up stops me. If I have been search through the blog for a few minutes and then pop up comes on it doesn't annoy me especially if their is a free report that compliments the blog.
