Emailing your old customers....

Simply put I have found 100's of past customers email addresses from orders. Could sending a website email them get us into trouble, anyone know how it works? Is it acceptable if it isn't a spammy email or something?

Also there will be an easy unsubscribe button on the bottom of the email?

Any ideas on this?

    Since they are your previous customers, you used to have relationship with them. You want to run re-engagement campaign, which is perfectly fine.

    I would send them email stating when and how you were conducted business in the past, and ask them to subscribe to your list (newsletter, free report, free video, etc).

    I would also state that this is not a spam email and I will never be contacting them again unless they give me permission by subscribing to your list.

    Alan's advice is good. As he says, you've already got a business relationship with them. I know there's a difference between clients and customers, but my past clients always seem quite happy to hear from me.

    Make sure that you give them good reasons to sign up to the newsletter so that they can see they are getting something of value from doing so, and so that your email doesn't just look like you are trying to squeeze new business from them. If you say something along the lines of 'As you've done business with us in the past we wanted to let you know about our email newsletter. It has lots of great tips/news/advice/offers which we think you would find useful and we wouldn't want you to miss out on'.

    If you make it so that you are getting in touch for their benefit, not for yours, you should get a good response.

    All the above is good info. The only thing I would add is that I would make the first few emails in the campaign all about giving them good content/info and hold off on the selling at first. Gradually pull them in if they have not heard from you in awhile.

    If they are your old customers, chances are you have already developed some relationship with them. Make sure you know your niche and warm them up by providing valuable information that suits their needs. If they are all opt in subscribers, and you are sending them good info, you are doing nobody harm. Always make sure you offer an unsubscribe option too. If your list is still unresponsive after a month I would delete the unresponsive emails.

    Since you have had a relationship with them in the past, you shouldn't get in trouble. Introduce yourself to them again, and let them know about your new newsletter. Show them how it'll create value for them.

    Let them know if they're not interested, you'll never bother them with emails. If they decide to subscribe, give them good reason to stay in your list. Once you're sure they're back on track then start presenting them your offers.
