Collecting Emails for Study

Hi All,
It's been a while since I've been around the WF. I am done with some year long projects in a another field and rejuvenating my involvement here. I have been spending the last couple of weeks getting my old lists together, setting up a couple of new products, and reviewing the latest success stories of so many of the Warriors I used to interact with here.

My first stop today is here in the Email Marketing section. I have a question for you Warriors.

Do any, or all of you, collect the mailings from marketers in order to get a sense of what's new and what's working?

I have tons of email addresses that I use to make sure I get spammed to heck on.
Then I am able to determine what some of the hottest products on the market are.

Yeah I have a physical draw of adverts full of cuttings and samples.

I also have a secondary email set up for subscribing to online marketing from various sources.

I've recently started to screen shot some sites and download videos as well, i use to just bookmark them but found they'd gone when i went back for them

This seems to be lost on some folks. I'm happy to see there are members taking advantage of this. Turning these into content and funnels for myself (with my own twists to them) has given me a hell of a swipe file catalog. Swipe files have really helped reduce my time investment over the past years.

It truly can give an instant snapshot of who is doing the JV thing with some marketers as well as helping to determine what's hot and what's not. When I receive only one or two emails from a couple of JV's, it's likely not a hot product to look into for promotion. If I get pounded by many JV's for weeks, then it's likely a good product to promote.

  • This is just my opinion, but, I do whatever necessary to distance myself from almost all email marketers. I've read their messages... and... they're crap. Actually, now that I think about it, that's not an opinion... it's a fact.

So, by your thinking, all of the reputable firms out there that market to us regularly by email are sending us crap messages. Starbucks, Fandango, Amazon, eBay, Wall Street Journal, Charities, etc., etc., etc., are all crap messages?

I understand, perhaps, that there are an abundance of crap marketers in general. Statistics show us only 3% of online marketers are consistent earners. However, you suggest that all email marketers including top vendors are crap. This is short sited and inconsistent with internet user polls that demonstrate that on average people subscribe to emails for the sole purpose of being informed of product and services updates which nullifies your generalization of the email marketing industry.

I get where you are coming from, but we are marketers and email marketing is an effective and prosperous industry. It isn't about you, it's about the clients and what they want.

I do like to keep a 'barometer' on the Industry as a whole. And to see what some of the very successful and reputable Cats are doing.

However, I very rarely use any Swipes from them. Mostly, because I can do a better job myself.

I also prefer to write my own, but I can't seem to stop examining the work of others. It seems to encourage me to improve on them by picking the best of others and putting my own twist on them.

In the end, not many are like us. So many think they can write copy that produces results, but in reality they are not studying the art of the copy which results in poor performance for them and they tend to fault the product or service rather than identify the issue as bad copy.

I enjoy the art of the pen and spend a fair amount of time testing various forms of copy and placement.

Its always good to know what is going around in the market. If we know what they're doing then we can do it better.

Back in the day, I used to write newsletters for someone and I always had a couple of his competitors subscribe just so I got see what was really hot in the market and what was not. It simplified things for me in many ways.

I have been out of email marketing for a while now, but if I go back. I am definitely keeping tabs on others too
