Reasons I shouldn't jump off this email marketing cliff?

The "etc" part of that title is this question --

I have a 9,500 email list on Constant Contact. What are the pros and cons of mailing that list from a Wordpress email marketing plugin located on a dedicated server instead of using the service?

Pros:
I'd save the monthly fee

Cons:
Would I get slammed as a spammer where Constant Contact knows how to smooth out problems like that?

Is there even a decent self-service email marketing program that would make it worth it to save the $80/month CC fee?

I would stick to using constant contact. You'll end up being put on a blacklist if you try do it yourself.

Only if your subscribers think you're a spammer, I think.

It's true that a hosted autoresponder service of that kind does, to some extent, insulate you. If you send out your emails using a self-hosted one, then if recipients hit the "spam" button, it will be the security and continuity of your own ESP/ISP/hosting/etc. services which are put in jeopardy.

On the other hand, though, if that were a problem to you, you''d probably already have complaints/notifications from CC about it?

There are certainly marketers with list the size of yours (and smaller, and much bigger) using self-hosted autoresponders. They do require some technical expertise/abilities, though, even though they work out cheaper.

If your subscribers took time to optin your list, it's not likely they will so easily brand you as a spammer. Just so long as you stay in contact with your list regularly, they will always know who you are, so there's no fear of being called a spammer.

So go for your own self hosted list, especially if it means you can actually save enough money to stay in business. That extra money might not seem like much to some, but it could be enough to keep you afloat until you are profitable or at least would be more money in your pocket. Just observe some common sense guidelines on email marketing such as compliance with any local anti-spam laws and including an unsubscribe link in every email.
