How to improve my email deliverability for "regular (non-mass) emails?

I tried a email related experiment with one of my domains, and lets just say the results went less than favorable.

Now I notice that the mailserver penalty applied to that domain has crept onto my other domains as well. Now even my regular business correspondences, as in 1 to 1 emails from these non-spam domains, fall into spam folders.

Is there any solution? How do I distance myself from the bad domain, and fix the problem?

I'm also thinking of using something like Google Apps, I'm not sure exactly how it works but used to know someone who used it for his business email. I assume it benefits deliverability in some way.

Usually not the domain is spam but the server.
Get a new IP and send it to your best contacts (those who have a high chance to open).
This will warm up the new IP and then you can send higher volumens.

But as said the domain should not be the problem.

Thanks; to clarify the issue, I used Amazon SES to send the bad email (as you can imagine, it only went out once before I lost that account!). I assume you are talking about the mail server IP on Amazon being affected. But as I'm seeing now, all my domains on my hosting under the same VPS IP are affected

      Generally this should not happen.

The IP of your VPS should not be affected.

As Amazon SES uses its own IP Pool to send your emails. So, if you send bad emails, it affects the IP reputation on Amazon's end and not your VPS. That is the reason Amazon bans users who send bad emails through their email marketing system.

      Thanks
      Jim
