  • Absolutely.

Ofcourse! Unsubscribe happens anyways. It's better just to focus on getting subscribers.

    It varies hugely.

The factors on which it depends include (a) traffic demographics, (b) niche, (c) incentivization, (d) subscriber expectations and (e) continuity, among others.

I tend, in all my niches, to build pretty selective lists, making sure that I opt in as high a proportion of the demographics who are going to be good customers for my kind of email marketing as I can. I want, expect and get very few unsubscriptions.

If using a hosted autoresponder service, large numbers of "unsubscribes" do have a potential downside: they alarm the service you're using, and in reality there's also nearly always a correlation of some kind between "unsubscribes" and "spam reports", and persistent spam reports higher than 0.1% (1 in 1,000 is now more or less an "industry standard" figure) will probably eventually get your account closed down.

When I first started years ago, I used a fake Unsubscribe link so that people could not leave (as I wanted to sell something to them). Not only is it required, but you really do not want those people to stay on your list. They are the ones that will click Spam instead of Delete if they cannot unsubscribe when they want to.

It's good to know why they unsubscribed but you cannot take it too personal.
