What to give away to entice email signups?

Hi Everyone!

In January I started a website to go along with my youtube channel (zimpaz.com).

I am getting about 10 unique visitors a day (not much I know buts its new!) but no email signups for my mailing list. I figured I needed to entice people by giving away something for free but I cant figure out what!

On my youtube channel, and website as an extension I make mainly technology review videos but also some tutorials on techy stuff. I get about 1500 views across all my videos.

I know many people offer an E-Book, but i cant really think of what i would put in one!

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers!

James

  • Depends on what kind of "techy stuff" you mean...As an example, if you specializes in Wordpress tutorials, you could offer a freebie consisting of the "Top 20 Wordpress Plugins of 2015"....or a report on how to make your Wordpress blog SEO friendly...something like that....the important thing is that your freebie relates to what you are doing. Hope that helps.

You have tutorials on your site. So, for the next tutorial instead of posting it use it as the giveaway

Try to put yourself in your audience's shoes. If you were to sign up, what would be good to receive? You're targeting techie people, so I was thinking something related to their hobby.

Maybe you could hold a raffle for those that would signup and give away an item that you have reviewed. I really don't like e-book giveaways, unless its an e-book site maybe.

You're the best person to answer this question, but I can give you the general idea.

    Determine this:

    1. What does your audience really want?
    2. Can it be monetized?
    3. Can it be given away for free when they signup?

    Give you an example.

Let's say I'm building a list in the MMO niche (make money online). I know my audience wants to make money and I know a vast proportion of them will be newbiews, so they need something simple that works.

    1. I would give away a simple, free to implement, yet powerful moneymaking system, and likely deliver it across a 2-day automated email course.

    2. I can monetize with a membership to my main site. The theory being: this course rocks, his membership site would be awesome!

    3. It can easily be given away just by setting up the course in GetResponse (in my case).

Whatever's going to maximize your income from the subsequent email series you send out to the subscribers.

For me, in all my niches, the "free report" (or whatever you choose to call it) is the single most income-determining step in the whole email marketing process: it's your opportunity to maintain and establish "continuity" and to set subscriber expectations clearly (and these are the two main issues inolved in email marketing).

I need my "free reports" to serve all these purposes, and my future income depends heavily on the extent to which they do so.

      Hey James,
You are in a hugely popular Market, at least that is what I gather.

There are plenty of things you can make an e-book about based on the techie stuff.

Really, it should be quite easy. You need to just sit down and ask yourself that question of what e book you would optin.

Research is the best you can do.

    Some fast ideas:

    - Create a tutorial PDF of a previous video.
    - Teach how to find deals and discounts.
    - How to choose the best product for you

Hmm.. you can get ideas from your top competitors.
See what they offer and think of something closely to that, that you can offer to your audience. You know, anything that is for free will be appreciated by people especially if it something that will catch their interests.

The best give away solves a problem. Dont give them what they want ... its what they need. What they cant move forward until they get this "awesone whatever it is thing"

So yes research look in forums for questions. Find A Problem. Give the Solution.

I hope this helps ... I know the words sounds easy... just try to look at it from a distance and you will find that problem that you can solve.

    Take care

    Rockn Give Away.

P.S. If you dont have a killer picture of your product it wont convert. Spend 5 bucks on fiverr and get a killer cover for your product. Get an image with one and then get an image with several like stacked on each other ..... so it looks like they are getting alot. Its a mental thing, the sub-conscience thinks its getting more then a simple file.

    Tons of awesome answers here!

Jeff Walker with 'The Product Formula' calls what your asking about -The Irresistible Offer-. I always liked that train of thought; "what can I offer that is irresistible to my buyers?" Along with the other ideas here the above is a great question to ask when your stuck.

You dont need to create an ebook or a product to give away in order to build your list. However creating one is definitely recommended as it gives your users something immediately after they join your list.
But that said, it takes some time and effort (depending on how good you are with technical stuff) to create such a freebie.
If you dont feel comfortable creating a product to give away, then dont. Instead hire someone who has an experience of doing that stuff. Or you simply go with the newsletter method. You can ask your users to subscribe to your list to get all of your updates/posts delivered to their inbox. This works too (considering you publish good stuff).
There is one more way: create a word document and talk about your favorite 10-15 blog posts from your blog. I see that you publish reviews. So you can talk about top 10 reviews on your site in your word document. Do a little formatting to make it look better and you're good to go. It wont be the best giveaway product in the world but it will still allow your users download that pdf share with their friends

Not sure what your Channel si about, here are a few ideas to create content to give away..

    1. search for GPL software, this is software that you can buy and own to give away like word press plug ins and stuff of that nature..

Software works great for list building offers.

Also if you can't come up with your own content for an E Book, then simply go over to Fiver or O desk and hire someone to write you a few paged E Book design a cover and then offer that as a FREE Give away to your youtube viewers..

    Hope this helped.

    Best of luck

I really think knowing your niche is the key for success, so what I'd do if I were in your place is to research, research and research, to understand what "your people" will give their mail addresses for. Here's a great article on capturing leads with giveaways as a start:

You are already doing tutorials. Make one a Lead Magnet for a subscription. Turn one into a free report instead of a video and give away as a Free Report. Figure out what your particular niche is looking for a give it to them.

I'd say one good strategy is to literally ask your audience what would they want.. Create a poll on your website or something, if they come up with a few ideas, you'll get inspired yourself and you'll figure it out, based on your audience's preferences.

    Put in your story....
    Your Story Is Your Power!
You will also find this out later when people message you and resonate with your story, as in “I’m totally just like you,” or, “I have the same struggles you have.” You need to break down and show them that you are a real and normal person; you are not somebody smarter than they are....
