What percentage of email open rate is considered good.

I have a small (but targeted) list of about 350 subscribers. (since the market is small in this non English language).

I haven't done email campaigns before, so I recently started emailing them some interesting articles, basically once a week for about few months.

However it seems to me my email open rate is too low. It varies between 38 and 70 opens for the entire list of 350.

And with every time I send them article open rate decreases.
Just to note that I don't push them to buy anything in the articles I basically try to give them value and build trust and once I have it will try to sell product.

So my guess is that my email Subject line is not intriguing enough, or am I wrong.
If that is the case what some good subject lines. I usually say something that provokes curiosity like:
"hey have you ever wondered about this..."
or
"here is something interesting I stumbled upon recently..."
or
"something practical about... (half of the article title)"

Any other suggestions on how to increase email open rate?

I'll appreciate it and thank you.

It depends where you're at with your list and if they know you and like you or not. I would say 30-50% is damn good. With a click banking funnel I only get 8-20%. It all depends.

What kind of survey? Any suggestions. I was thinking about a poll widget saying "what kind of materials are you interested in learning?" with 3-4 categories. Since I write in the dating niche topic.

Or should I put the survey in exchange for the free ebook ?

I concur with a lot of what the others are saying here.

Just building your Brand and Name recognition over time will get those Open rates higher.

There is not really any magic trick. Clever Sub. lines can work.

But if you have a well established Brand with your Name and a Sub. line they find interesting ...then you have a winning combination

Look at your own inbox, how many messages do you just ignore compared to how many you open, and then how many actually make you click?

Remember that your subscribers are real people, and like you they are time limited in what they can do.

The key fact isn't the open rate, it's the relationship, and just keep on building that up for maximum success.

I know it is the relationship, but if my emails don't get opened what is the chance for me to build it? I don't over email them. Once per week maximum.

Maybe I should look at the best time to send it.

  • Better subject lines will get you higher opens; but what then? What happens when the subject lines don't work anymore? And believe me, clever subject lines only work well on people who don't know you well enough yet. Once people are on your list for a while, your subject lines become less and less important. All that matters then, is the sender of the email -- and that only plays a positive role in email opens... if your messages are worth reading.

This. Exactly. It's about how your subscribers feel about you, and whether they're eagerly awaiting you email and open it enthusiastically. (If my father or my college professor or a good friend sends me an email, I open it, every single time. It's about who the email's from and how I feel about that person.)

10-15% is considered good, and anything above 20% is considered awesome.

If you want to increase your open rates just keep sending out great emails. Like the others have said, after a while your email list will only open your emails if you like what you're sending them.

For example I'm subscribed to a couple of marketers who I instantly open any email they send because I know whatever is inside will be really good.

I would say 20% and up.

I know this might sound like not much of an open rate to count,

But we need to keep in mind that 20% to even as much as 40% email opens are never make it to the statistics due to images being disabled on a client side.

    They're basically unaccounted.

So 20+% of open rate is a good rate.

10 to 15% is a good rate. It is all about your subject line. My open rate goes up if I offer a free PLR course. Or I am one of the first to offer a new hot moving WSO course. Most of your list members are going to purchase the top WSO of the day, from the first one that contacts them about that course.

It's absolutely frightening that people can believe such nonsense.

But it perhaps explains why everyone says that 95+% of people fail in internet marketing, and fewer than 5% succeed.

Not for most of us, it isn't.

I hope and trust my subscribers will open an email from me regardless of its subject-line, because they were awaiting and expecting it and want to read it so much. I'd be in trouble if I had to use "fancy subject-lines" to get the attention of my own subscribers!!

One thing to look at is the email providers that have the lowest open rate.

The likes of Hotmail, Yahoo, and others all have different policies and spam scores, and this can effect what they report as delivered (but makes no change to open rates)

I now automatically delete anyone who has an AOL email address as they flag mail as received and then delete it without ever delivering it to the user. (this is in their terms and conditions!)

Sometimes Hotmail will delete a batch of my mails, but sending from a different IP gets it though. Again it is reported as delivered even thought it isn't.

I resolved this issue by sending mails to different providers using different email servers. It is boring to set up but worth it.

it's impossible to overthink this. you have to be extremely extremely subjective and take a step back.... would YOU open your emails? how would you react to your emails

I spent a really really long time writing all of my emails and sequencing them before any of them touched an auto-responder. and then re-writing them. and then re-sequencing them. and then changing the headlines. and then adjusting the email wording. and then re-adjusting the sequence. and then adjusting the interval. and then picking apart the subject lines to minute details. and then going back to study the email wording even more. each email opened depends on every word that you've spewed to them up to that point.

Really break it down. When in your series is it most crucial for you to gain trust? Which emails do a better job at gaining trust? How can you adjust your email sequence to help this?

I have received a few emails back from people on my list that have told me that they really value my emails and have told me that I share really valuable information. this is positive reinforcement for me but i'm always thinking OCD style about my series and how i can improve it. There are a few things i can do to get more revenue but thats another story. This is about open rates.

I've noticed that a lot of people overlook the teaser line in their emails. This can be very important for open rates... it's essentially a second subject line. The top line (or a few characters of it) in every email shows up as a "preview" in the inbox next to the subject line. Use this to your advantage. Do you want your subscribers to see "Subject Line Here - Dear First Name...." or something else?

It's not what you want to hear... but it depends!

For the internet marketing niche, from my personal experience a good open rate will be about 8%-10%, a good click through rate willl be about 3%-5%.

Even though our industry has a low open rate, it has a good click through rate!

If you have a really strong relationship with your list, the numbers will be higher.

If you don't build a relationship with your list, the numbers will go down dramatically over time.

Here is a list for other industries:

You have good ratio. My rate is about 25%

I think open ratio depends on the Subject and Name.

Putting an interesting subject line is a good tip.

Keep in mind that the ESP/server you use to send emails may play the biggest role on the rates.

For instance, I can send an email on my ESP and get 40%+ but if I send the exact same email using Interspire and Mandrill, it is closer to 10%.

That said, it is a newer IEM install so the IP needs to continue being warmed and built up.

But it goes to show that every single factor matters.

If your list is opt-in, I would think 15%+ is good. If it is built/scraped/purchased, 7%+ should be considered good. All of these numbers will increase if you are on a good ESP.

Perhaps your low open rates may be due to lack of deliverability. Are all your subscribers getting your emails? Perhaps they may not be reaching their inboxes and getting lost on their way. You subject lines can be another factor. I read the other day, that if you include the names of your subscribers in the subject line they are more likely to increase your open rates. I wouldn't recommend you to go for sparking curiosity at this stage. In my opinion, a good approach would be to use a headline that tells the people exactly what they're going to be get, but in an eye catching manner.

If you're having issues due to deliverability, then you can find some pretty killer tips in here.

Thing is, people opt-in to a list based on a promise you should have made.

As long as you keep that promise they'll keep opening your emails.

If you want to test how much they like you, sell them something and let their wallets tell you that.

I told by my guru in list building, he said that he will be very happy for 25 persen open rate. i think it's good also. But you know, it's depend on your optin (double optin/single optin)
Usually, double optin will make your open rate is bigger than single because it's their real email
But, when you use single optin maybe your open rate will be small, because we are not sure this is their real email...

First of all, I really hope your promoting something to your list. Don't just be 'that guy' the only gives them links to articles. Also, try adding open loops in your subject line and in your email copy aswell.

    For example:

Open Loop subject line- This traffic method is...

Which one would you rather click on?

Most people seem to miss this, as is apparent in most of the posts in this thread, but as an Internet Marketer your primary job is to test, test, test.

The first thing that you should do is analyze your list by domain. You'll likely find that over 50% of your list is made up of gmail/yahoo accounts.

Create your own gmail and yahoo email accounts and subscribe them to your list. Now see if you get your own emails in your gmail/yahoo primary inbox. If not then you now know that over 50% of your subscribers do not even get to see your email.

I have found that Gmail and Yahoo will send me to the spam folder on an email by email basis, simply because of the terminology I have used within the email. I tweak the email and keep re-testing until I inbox. After a while you get familiar with the kind of things that trigger the gmail/yahoo filters - simple things like a '$' sign within the email content. Strangely, I can get away with things in the subject line that I won't get away with within the content.

It's part of your job as an email marketer to ensure that you are inboxing with the major ESPs. The impact can be HUGE and it's the attention to this level of detail that will set you apart from everyone else.

    Hope that helps

I recently read something written by an eminent email marketer (forgotten who) that assumed it was the same people opening their emails all the time. When they started analyzing things, they realized that it was the complete opposite! So don't assume that only 10% of your list love you... it's potentially much higher than that but you're vying for eyeballs in a competitive inbox.

You've received some good advice in here, especially from Diana.

You need to be split testing all the time.

You also need to look at your analytics. Where are your subscribers?

After testing different days and times of emailing and looking at where my subscribers were, I found my best open rates were when I sent out early in the morning (3:30am PST, 6:30am EST).

When I looked at the analytics, I found a large percentage of my subscribers were on the east coast and were opening my emails at work first thing in the morning. Another large group was opening the emails between 3:30am and 4:30am and I was stunned to find out where they were. In Sweden, of all places!

They were opening my emails at lunch time for them.

No wonder my open rate was worse when I emailed later in the day. I was missing the time when the east coast and Swedish subscribers were wanting to read email.

      DUH!

But without looking at the data, I didn't know that.

Also learn as much as you can about your subscribers.

      Do they ever email you?

Mine do all the time and I make sure I pay attention to what they like, what they complain about, etc.

I also make sure I write them back. They love it and tell me I'm the only online person who ever personally responds to them.

Sure, it takes up some time but it builds the relationship.

That's been vital to my success with email.

Gmail tracks interaction. So by them responding to your emails and you responding back, you're building up a good reputation with Gmail which will ultimately improve your inboxing.

I think it is a very good open rate you have there One thing to suggest if you haven't already; is in your first email (and emails after that) is to remind subscribers to add your to their contacts so that your emails don't end up in your clients' junk folders.

And just keep doing what you're doing...build trust...give give give! Give your best knowledge that will help subscribers to reach their end goal in order to keep building that trust and then send them offers in line with your business and values. And do this DAILY

I agree with everyone else, Your open rate is good!
You just offer them something of value with each email, build trust by offering real information, that they can use to their advantage. If your emails have no value to them, they will ignore you, just like you would ignore emails from your own inbox if they don't interest you.

Your open rate is ok, and since you are going to write a lot of emails, it is a wise idea to get some subject line swipe files to get inspiration.

How: open a gmail account with the sole purpose of subscribing to your competitors newsletters. Then, once a week or whenever you want, you log it, and look that email as you were a potential subscriber or client in that niche. Once you find a subject line that grabs your attention, add it to your swipe file.

Plus there's a shortcut as well, you can buy swipe files from reputable marketers as well!

Regarding our emails we send out, for our main business we send a monthly email shot which has over 2000 opt in subscribers and we are hitting anything between 40-70% opening.
