Authority, Email List and beyond

From what I've read I understand that email marketing is all about trust, between you the marketer and the reader,
This makes me think, is it possible to be a successful email marketer and build and profit from a list without being authoritative, without being Mike Geary? (Not volume wise, but authority wise)

And if your answer is yes, what is the strategy beyond building the list, marketing same category info products? why would they buy it from me? it would only look like spam in their eyes.

Is there any good recent book/reference for email marketing?

Thanks!

Its the voice you are writing in that gives you authority.

And you only get that voice by developing a relationship, by showing your readers who you really are.

Now that's who you really are in business, doesn't mean you need to send pictures of your cat eating ice cream from your bowl.

If your email communications consist of nothing more than one pimping email after another, your authority voice is never going to be heard. Honestly, it is much easier to develop this in markets besides IM or MMO where so many people send nothing but affiliate emails.

It can certainly be done, but its harder.

Well just think of anytime you are dealing with cold traffic.

They have no idea who you are. Do they still buy?

    Of course they do.

The strategies to fit how you want to position yourself, will be up to you...

As there's 'quite a few' ways to go about doing so.

Like Michael said, building a relationship give you authority. If you really care for them, they will trust you and pay attention to your recommendation.

Ever talk to a friend about a good product you purchased? works the same way.

And like James say, is up to you.
