Pop email collection converts less

I just want to share with fellow listbuilders a HARD LESSON I learned over the years... WF's given so much to me so I figured I'd give back.

Pop up email collection forms or lightboxes aren't likely to produce high converting leads

It's true that if you use a popup or lightbox, your email collection rate SKYROCKETS. I enjoyed an over 150% increase in email collection when I used a lightbox. I even BLEW UP this already elevated rate by setting my popup wordpress plugin to REQUIRE optin.

The problem? Most of these leads didn't open my emails. Still, I kept collecting and I kept sending offers.

Until... I grabbed a clue.

For another website, I put PREMIUM content behind an email optin 'wall'. This method gets a decent % of my total traffic to convert.

HOWEVER... when it comes to BUYING STUFF...

This pool of prospects OUTPERFORMED the lightbox-recruited leads. The lightbox crowd isn't even in the same ballpark - most don't open and of those that do, most don't buy.

See below:

Lesson learned: Use content optin 'walls' - they are easy to set up. Just use a static HTML page and have your autoresponder redirect to it after optin.

And yes, use a SINGLE optin setting.

Just wanted to share.

    Interesting man!

Thanks for sharing your experiences on the optin popups. I'm glad to have learned this today.

    You are the man!!

I suggest that if you use lightbox or popup email recruitment, PRUNE your list aggressively. Too many 'list squatters' can burn a hole in your pocket.

    Hmmm... Interesting.

I added a lightbox and I started getting a lot more subscribers. I have noticed that a lot of them haven't open my emails either (but, I've also noticed some of them open later emails, too). Maybe some of the messages are going to spam?

    Thumbs up for sharing.

You say your optin rate increased by 150%.

But what is your site-wide optin rate? I read of pages converting 3-5% of the unique users to subscribers. Maybe I am doing something wrong (or German users are different :-)) but I only get around 0.1 to 0.5 percent opting in.

Here's my sitewide screenshot after using the 'info wall' technique.

Aweber's tracking system is weird because the conversion is higher than 100%. I step the reader through several stages so they convert 100% on the info wall. Don't get too excited though, traffic filter rate is around 3:1 to get to this stage.

That's all for the best probably because those people who got filtered off wouldn't be buyers anyway...

What exactly is a content optin 'wall'?

Basically, a series of pages that lures the reader into deeper and deeper information and once they get basic info (you built your credibility at this stage), you clue them in on a SECRET and get them excited... and they have to optin to get that BONUS info.

This series of pages solves the CREDIBILITY problem created by POPUPs. I have disabled popup email collection and I get more BUYERS now.

Actually I have had quite the opposite experience. Two step email forms convert better for me than the traditional popup or exit pop.

Why do you think that is?

By 'results' do you mean CONVERSION rates (sales)? Or conversion as in sign ups?

Neither, he's just plugging some affiliate links.

You are fun to share your experience. The reason that pop up don't produce high converting lead is that people don't want to be forced to subscribe

They're not really being forced to subscribe. You just actively bring your sign up form to their attention.

Like I said, popups EXPLODE your mailing list subscription rate. No question there. The problem is MAKING MONEY off those subscribers. Totally different story.
