Can you build a MLM business online?

Has anybody had any success at building a MLM (network marketing) business online? I feel like there is a good opportunity for fast growth if you have the right model. If so how did you do it?

I was thinking a landing page targeted to the internet marketer because I think MLM can only work online if your downline/recruits can duplicate the the process for themselves. Most internet marketers will know about landing pages and getting traffic. Any thoughts?

Don't waste your time doing MLM, many people get caught up with it but you can earn way more with other marketing models online.

I have friends who make $200,000 a year with network marketing. They do well and have built a large portion of that working from home, but not necessarily doing what you think they would. Almost 90% of that was from buying leads and calling them EVERY SINGLE DAY! They are a husband and wife team, but they only work 30 hours week between them COMBINED. It took them two years. But it was every day. Most online stuff being taught to build an MLM is designed for people who won't do what I just shared with you. You need 800,000 Twitter followers and 800 sqeeze pages and 100,000 FB friends, because you simply don't wish to talk to 100 people a day on the phone. or meet people face-to-face when going about your day.

TBH, it's a terrible business for most, including me. They promote everywhere they go. For me, when I'm done working, I want to be done working. If you are not willing to talk about your MLM every single chance you get, then it is likely to be not worth your time.

Making 100 dials is a great daily method of operation to recruit people. Sure it's an offline method people have been using long before Al Gore invented the Internet but the Internet is a great communication tool for following up with prospects and training your downline.

I'm curious if your friends mostly built their business from calling purchased leads only or did they "Tap-Root" into their new recruits warm market?

Tap-Rooting is when you sponsor a new person and ask them to make a list of their entire warm market but you tell them not to call their list. Instead, you make the calls for them.

This is different from making 3 way calls. You want your new recruits to only listen to you making the calls so they know that you are not alienating their warm market. By watching and listening to you they will learn how to effectively duplicate what you did for them and teach their new members to do the same.

Most sponsors only advise their new people to go out and talk to everyone they know but fail to teach people the skills that will enable them to do that in a way that does not turn prospects off.

You won't have to purchase cold leads for very long if you learn to Tap-Root into your teams warm market.

        Cheers,
        Steve

It is true that with network marketing you are always relying on the work of people you recruit, and who they recruit. The churn rate is high, meaning that people join - they don't get the results they want fast enough, and they leave.

I think it is a good idea to be involved in a network marketing company that you are passionate about, but don't necessarily do it for the money, and don't rely on the money.

You might make more money more easily by creating your own niche product around an area of expertise you have. You could in fact use that to generate leads and build a network marketing business, I know someone who has done that.

I have a side income network marketing business that I'm involved with, but it was mainly the opportunity to get free product and an extra income from signing up customers that attracted me to it. I have found that although some people did become distributors I didn't find any that really were able to replicate my own efforts. As such I make more money from personal customers than team income.

Perhaps there are people who are using the internet to sign up reps into their business. I'm always open minded to such ideas, however getting the team to replicate is always going to be a challenge.

I have done pretty well with Network Marketing over the past 8-9 years. Was in the Top 100 distributors for 2 companies in that time. I never built them online though. What I did very successfully was use email marketing to maintain, motivate and inform, not only my customer base, but also my distributor base. This is what kept me in business for all those years. The one business I started 8 years ago still pays me to this day and I have not focused on it for 3 years. I send out an email here and there but that is it.

Main problem with MLM is getting other people to recruit for you and keeping them active. For this you would need to create a community. The easiest way to do this is to have a facebook group. And then someone joins your downline, then invite them to join your group immediately. There you will have to advice, teach and train them.

Overall MLM is not then difficult to start with, but you have to do it right!

Quite shocking on here what people are saying about MLM considering it has made more millionaires than any other industry in the world.

Firstly just like people fail at learning the guitar, or learning to do affiliate marketing, or even failing at starting up their own business, just like everything else many people fail.

95% of people fail at MLM and quit within the first 3 months. If you are looking to get rich in the first 3 months then you best try to find some get rich quick scheme.

Secondly, there is many different types of MLM companies and only people who have failed or never done network marketing would paint all companies with the same brush.

A Ferrari and Ford Fiesta are both vehicles that get you from A>B however a Ferrari can get you there faster and in style.

The first ever company I was in was called Forever Living which is 40 years old, a great company but it wasn't for me. I made money and still do make money from adverts and work I did from the previous year but I do not promote that company any more as I found something better.

With the new company I joined I qualified as Manager within 6 weeks, I was then flown to the US and Amsterdam, I never expected all this to be happening it is truly amazing.

Many people think it is all about recruiting and I can honestly tell you that I build my business COMPLETELY online. I had never met anyone who joined the team, nor the customers I was selling to.

Yes you can do MLM offline, but for me the way is online.
If your passion like me is for ONLINE then you will love it, but it does take some learning depending on your current online skills.

Hope this helps, there will always be haters for MLM.
The people who say MLM doesn't work or people at the top get money are the people who have never tried it and know nothing about it, or tried it and failed.

You need to be guided by someone who is succeeding.

I've been doing MLM online and can tell you that you can build a team online and without ever talking to them on the phone. I contact my team only when someone emails me with help.

You just need a website of your own and then send traffic to it. You will just need to add a link on your home page that goes to the business opportunity and let the video do the selling and closing for you.

Many are doing it like this for years and have done really well.

    Hi Brian,

To get succeed in MLM, you need to understand the basic principle of how it works in an online marketing industry.

Follow these 3 basic principles for succeed:

    1. Set up your own marketing system
    2. Track your leads generation system properly
    3. Create a different and interesting email marketing plan

    Thanks.

Hello, I have never built an MLM online, but since I have recently been trying to learn how to do it, I felt I needed to share something very important:

If you plan to send traffic to a page that contains affiliate links using AdWords, you are breaking a Google policy (The Bridge Page Policy) and your account could be suspended for it.

Instead, you can use Adwords and direct traffic to a Squeeze Page to obtain people emails. Then you can promote affiliate links to your email list!

Make sure this Squeeze Page complies with Google policies and that it really offers something of value to the visitors.

Best regards! And let us know your results!

I will publish my own results when I have them.

I didn't read through all the replies on this thread, but I'm sure there is a lot of people saying no and a lot saying yes.

If you are serious about building a mlm online, I would recommend the self-funded proposal strategy. This is where you offer a high margin e-course on something related to your mlm (if you selling a weight loss mlm product for example it could be a weight loss ebook).

This helps you have multiple offers and still make money even if someone said no to the mlm product (or opportunity).

As far as can you make it successful? The answer is a resounding yes. I've never been a six-figure earner but years ago I was a full time mlmer and built that mainly through SEO.

People who said that you have to rely on recruiting efforts is not totally accurate either, so don't let that discourage you.

Network marketing is built on the principle of 1,000 distributors each having a handful of customers. So you may have one leader who really inspired the group but even they only have a handful of customers. So by the nature of what network marketing is, building out an organization is worthwhile.

The affiliate marketing method is built off the idea of a handful of super affiliates who produce massive amounts of traffic and sales for the company.

    Both have advantages and disadvantages.

One of the BIG advantages of network marketing is that if Google updates its algorithm, you're not screwed, you're still producing sales and might have some distributors rocking it in the offline world.

If you learn how to do affiliate marketing really well (which in my opinion takes more skillsets than mlm business-wise at least technically whereas mlm relies more on leadership skills) you can have your cake and eat it too.

I have a friend who sells a mlm product but absolutely refuses to recruit a soul into the company. He has enough customers where he's making $10k a month off customers alone using his affiliate marketing skill sets.

Another friend she's gotten over a 1,000 personal customers using the internet, no mention of an opportunity, but she also had a separate website targeted towards people looking for opportunities. So she built both a sales organization and a pretty strong book of customers.

It is really up to you if you want to do mlm online. I think it has a lot of advantages over other business models (duh I'm obviously involved, right?) but also has its disadvantages versus other business models.

It's a great profession all around though. Just remember regardless what you do - it takes work. Not exactly "hard" work - you're not going be digging ditches - but it's certainly not fast money work - if you choose the right company though it can be one of the best rebill offers you ever promote.

    My two cents :-)

    Hi Brianpz

I agree with much of the sentiment here.

First off, you have to be with a program that has been around for years and has members that have truly been there and done that...success in this industry is a team sport no ifs or buts.

Secondly find a program that as an offering that inspires you and is not just based on recruiting people to make its money.

Thirdly addressing the high turnover rate, here are some thoughts:

    • Create a co op where your downline team can get active signups directly from you that will help motivate them.
    • Gift certificates, I know some people may say that's a waste of money but if you do this you can motivate your players to be more active in your program something many teams in this industry over look
    • Create quality content weekly via autoresponder to keep your team learning engaged and motivated - content marketing in this industry is one of the missing links to higher conversions
    • Rewards incentives and the like
    • If you find a particular marketing strategy that is bringing customers to your offerings let your downlines know what your doing and how your doing it
Unlike many programs you must not look at this as a numbers game, people get treated like statistics so as soon as they join, and get no support and make no money they leave. You cant afford to see numbers treat people like they have financial objectives and you are there to help them achieve them.

These should help stop the downline bleed from your team to a degree. If you can get your downline team making money as soon as possible your success really stems from theirs.

The program you choose to be part of must have a solid and robust support and training facility and not be one of those deals that leave you to fend for yourself as soon as you signup.

Rome wasn't built in a day and if perseverance is not one of your strongest traits getting by in this industry will be tough.

    Ben

Yes it is totally possible. Look at Jonathan Budd. He's done exceedingly well with the IM approach. However, recently, I've switched to telemarketing. It works waaaaaaaay better. I know, I know... telemarketing gave me a bad taste in my mouth before too! But hey, I'm not too proud to just go with what works. But that's just me

      You are so right Cosmolito

When I started doing telemarketing the marketers I recruiting did more in two weeks than my 400+ down line team did in a whole year.
But the problem with telemarketing is the idea of calling people scares many newbies and their fear of rejection is great. Telling them that 99% of the heavy hitters in this industry use this very strategy to grow their teams fast doesn't make them feel any better.

Building any business online is now becoming the only way many marketers will do business online. My mentor has built her business 100% ONLINE, earns multiple six figures and is now training me to do the same. Would I say anyone can do it? Certainly not. It's not for the faint hearted or for those who want to make money in a few weeks. While it's possible to do so, it's not common. Most give up before they give it long enough to put the work in that needs to be put in. It takes more time to build relationships where that is when I think video marketing is an excellent place to start, Having your own blog is essential as well because that's almost like your "home" on the internet. No one can take that from you and people then come to your blog, positioning you as the authority figure.

Not sure if that helps or made sense. I kind of rambled.Lol.

I agree, I find the best people to contact or promote to are people who are already involved with network marketing.

It is much easier to get an experienced network marketer to join and duplicate then it is to get a new business opportunty seeker to.

Ofcourse, you will find some newbies that do very well and are able to follow their uplines.

This seems like an old thread from last year however the question is still valid.

Of course you can build an MLM Online but it needs to have the potential to make you money for every sale that you make. Not just a business opportunity that solely relies on you making money after you have built a large downline.

Now this question seems to be asked a lot...

    Can you build online?

Look, there is no way in hell I would be doing personal selling in this day and age.

However, this does not mean that personal selling does no longer work.

Personal selling still works and some people may be better off marketing off line.

I just won't do it. I refuse to.

I much rather have people coming to me instead of the other way around!

I have leaned that the most important thing to do if you want to succeed in MLM is to have a system that your recruits can follow and help them succeed faster because the learning curve with MLM is too long. Most recruits give up once they find that they are not making any progress. I find creating your own squeeze page instead of the company's and driving traffic to it through targeted Solo ads and presenting a proven system to your prospects will help you succeed more in MLM

I entered the world of Online Business by doing MLM.
I managed to build quite a large team by only using a simple blog and YouTube.
I did so well with MLM online that I was even sent an award which was very surprising...
However, eventually as the company I was with decided to put up prices and change a few things around my team slowly fall apart.

I didn't loose any money so my experience wasn't bad but I wouldn't go into MLM again because it's simply not for me....
I also hate the fact that you end up trying to recruit your friends and so on...

However, I do not regret joining MLM as it taught me how to learn and inspired me to develop my knowledge Internet Marketing, SEO and so on which is how I ended up were I am today.

Rather then trying to succeed in MLM online I think a much smarter choice would be to sell affiliate products online.
