Tip for handing out freebies to your list

I notice quite a few marketers hand out freebies to their lists by linking right to a pdf file. So in other words the lead clicks on a link in the email and the product downloads immediately.

By doing it this way you miss out on a opportunity to grab some extra sales!

Here are 2 things you can do to get more mileage from handing out free gifts:

1. Always bundle your freebie in a zip file.
a. Include the main freebie your are giving out
b. Include a few short cuts to sales pages or affiliate offers in the zip file (e.g. bonus1.html, click-here.html, etc...)
c. Most people do this but I'll mention it again - add affiliate links and links back to your homepage inside the pdf.
d. I also like add a page in the beginning that links out to my squeeze page. I then allow my readers the rights to share the pdf. That way if someone gets a copy of it they may end up in your list in the future.

2. Always send your leads to a download page not a direct link.
a. build a quick download page with a "download your free thing here" link
b. add some bonus links to click banking partners (if you have them)
c. add links to "recommended" paid/affiliate products

Also I don't recommend using just text/click here links either. Drop a nice product graphic and a little blurb about what the product is. For example:

"Enjoy your free download! Also don't for get to check out my Extreme List Building for Profits product! This is an 89-part video course consisting of 300 hours of HD video that will teach how to get 1 million subscribers in 15 minutes..... Click here to learn more " ;-)

This of course will have a very low CTR, as most people will just grab their freebie and run, but if you have a large list and give bonus gifts out often it can add up to a few more dollars in your pocket.

Agree. If you are giving away good stuff, some people will want to bookmark that page.

And a bookmarked page is easier to access then started email.

Thanks for this great information, you have some great points and they are all valuable.

I really like the idea of having a download page. Like you said this will give you a great opportunity to provide bonuses and other recommend affiliate offers.

Keep in mind that offering freebies to join your list is not always the best way, it create a very low value of customers joining your list from the get go.
You may consider attempting to sell them something from the get go and then trying to close the partials that come off your sales page.
I have always found this to be way more effective then offering free stuff to join my mail list.
If your not going to open your wallet, I dont really want you on my list.

From my experience i find it more profitable to create a buyers list and not a
    freebie seekers list.
I think its better to sell some $1 product and build a buyers list of 1000 people then
giving away freebies and building a 10,000 subscribers list.
But if you do want to create a list by giving away something for free then the tips that
smedia11 shared are really the best in my opinion.

I keep both a buyers list and a freebie list.

With my buyers list I occasionally send them a link to a bonus page to help keep them attentive to my emails (and for my other reasons specified in the original post.)
