Your Advice is Welcome here: Email Marketing

Hi, I have a small list of 650 subscribers in the IM niche and, over the past 6 months, about 60% of them have not opened my broadcasts at all. Should these optin subscribers be trashed or is there a way of salvaging them?

I've sent promo broadcasts about once a week plus non-promo content to try and engage them. The results have been dismal - with NO sales to this list.

Thanks for suggestions.

Hi. First off, congratulations on building your list to 650 subscribers I wouldn't consider a 40% open rate a tragedy...not by a long shot. Instead, I'd be more worried about actual conversions- how many people are clicking through on your emails (to your sales page, affiliate website, etc.)?

Quite simply I don't know what you do or don't know but from what I have read, it seems you really need to start doing some more research on how to correctly engage and monetize a list.

Here are a couple questions for you:

-Where did the traffic come from?
-What did your squeeze page offer/what was the headline?
-What are promo's are you emailing them?
-How often do you email them?
    -Are you segmenting your list?
-Are you broadcasting or do you have a set number of autoresponder messages already set?

Some of the biggest problems with people who can't seem to monetize their list are:

    1) What you gave away for free, sucks. If you don't give massive value on your free offer that is clear and actionable why would they PAY/Purchase your promoted products?

    2) This is my opinion but it also the opinion of the biggest names in internet marketing like Frank Kern, Ryan Deiss, Perry Belcher, Russel Brunson, Todd Brown:

You should/need to have a "tripwire". A product (from the beginning of the relationship) that is ideally $10 or less. It is seen as a low-risk purchase from the subscribers and turns them from a prospect to a buyer. Then (if I were you) would have a Core product shown after that then at least one more up-sell.

    My funnel looks like:

    Optin> $10 Tripwire> $47 Core > $97 cross-sell> $997 High ticket.

    3) Frequency of messaging. Again, my opinion. You need to be emailing them once per day or once every other day. Yeah people will say "but if you do that people will unsuscribe!" Good I say go right ahead. Do you know why? Because you should be "weeding" out your subscribers and should be left with your ideal subscriber list who will stay on your list and will be active and listen to your emails.

    4) Quit sending broadcasts. Create autoresponder messages. Personally I have over 700 autoresponder messages and it truly makes this whole list building thing very easy and almost as passive as it gets in terms of income.

    5) Segment your list and email people about what they are interested in. It makes your subscriber base way more targeted and will increase conversions a ton.

    6) "Open Loops". Do you know why TV shows can keep people hooked from episode to episode? Because at the very end of the episode something dramatic happens but it is not solved until next weeks episode or whatever.

Try sending emails and keeping them engaged by doing this. Sometimes I will ask a question or have an un-finished story and then finish the story or have an answer to the question I asked, in the next days email.

Damn I could go on and on but don't have time.

Implement what I said and also start listening to the guys in this list building game who actually make millions of dollars per year. Check out the names I mentioned above and learn from them.

    best of luck.

That's really great, thanks for sharing.

Just curious: how different are your sales for the $47 core product when you add a $10 tripwire product versus not adding one? Are the changes in sales significant? Thanks in advance.

        Huge difference.

Thing is, I use to see the $10 tripwire as more of an obstacle getting in the way of people seeing my $47 product but it's not. Once I implemented it I saw overall ROI of at least x2 if not x4 the sales I had before.

Once someone purchases it they are 8%-12% more likely to spend more money with you on higher costing products and services. (Source: Dan Kennedy).

Depending on my funnel and traffic source I can get the $10 product to convert anywhere from 5%-12% and then immediately around 10-25% on my $47 product all the way through to the rest of my products.

Another thing Dan Kennedy and Russell Brunson say is that "regardless of copy and marketing you should be able to convert at least 20% on your upsells" which is true most of the time.

Anyways I highly recommend checking out this guide Ryan deiss put together.

If you are going by your autoresponder stats, keep in mind that if they don't have images on, the autoresponder can't see them opening the email.

Mozilla Thunderbirds default setting is to NOT show images in emails.

Personally, I would email that 40% only with a very different type of title than you normally use and ask them a simple question. Basically, you'll re-qualify them...and in doing so, you may also turn them back into fresh leads again. For example-

Title- Did You Finally Run Off and Join the Circus?

    Hi [First Name]-

I haven't seen you around my website lately and I was starting to get worried. So let me ask; is there something that I could be doing better to assist you?

If so, please complete this quick three question survey to help me better understand your needs.

Please disregard this message if you actually did run off and join the circus.

    Sincerely-

    <you>

That's a good idea. Try to reach out to them to see if they will respond. You don't want to be paying for leads who are unresponsive.

I just deleted around 250 of my own leads yesterday.

The downside of email marketing is the fact that not everyone will give you their very best email address.

Even if they don't unsub on their own you should be cleaning your lists regularly. If your AR charges by the sub then you can end up paying for a lot of dead weight. No opens for a month, I cut them loose.

Never send an email that is simply one big image and certainly don't put any messaging in an image that a user must see to complete the action you want from an email. Also, make sure that all of your images are actually links to your landing page or website. This way, at a minimum, your potential image dead space can still drive traffic to your destination.

Definitely go in and clean that List. If someone has not opened an email of yours over a period of a few months just get rid of them.

Also, if you have done things right with a List of 650 over last 6 months with broadcasts once a week you should have had at least a few Sales.

I would take a step back and look at the source of your traffic .

    Solo ads ?

Most of the time when you have leads that don't respond to you, they probably entered emails that they don't use at all.

    Here' a little tip:

Even though these people are not clicking on your links, the best thing you can do is to keep doing what you are doing and also make sure that you get new subscribers on a daily basis.

I read somewhere that over 50% of your new subscribers will buy from you right AFTER they opt in. So the key is to get new leads on a daily basis. I have tested this and it is very true.

have u considered not blasting a newsletter to ur list but instead talking to the more personal? I always create rapport with my new ad old leads and I get super high open rates around 50% that way.

Usually don't pitch and offer until 2-4th email. So the leads are more inclined to click since they emailed u back. If you want to automate this I use TEAR email software but i'm sure there are other ways to do it.

PM me if ur an email marketer. Always like sharing ideas.

    • I agree with what the others said. Assess your overall strategy, see what is and what isn't working, then make the necessary changes. Find new subscribers and frequently clean the list.

      Good luck!
