Typical double opt-in rates?

What rates are typical for people clicking that confirmation e-mail in a double-opt-in process?

Atm I am building a new list in a gardening niche. Using aweber, only 50% of potential subscribers are confirming their subscription to my list, despite the fact I've outlined very clearly that once they do that, the download link for their free e-book will be received in the next mailing. I made the process as newbie-friendly as possible.

This is a lower rate than I was expecting, was wondering if it's because this niche is not necessarily as tech savvy, but if other factors come to mind please share that too.

It makes single opt-in seem attractive, but I live in Canada and have Canadians on other lists so don't want to risk my business on a single opt-in process. So, I'm not looking to switch to single opt-in, just need to have a better context of expectation. Thanks for any thoughts on the topic.

You should risk it because across the board internet marketers have found that single optin is much more profitable in the long run than double

Do you tell the folks to look into their spam folder if no confirmation mail arrives?
I'm using a freemailer for my newsletter subscriptions and almost 3/4 of the confirmation mails end up in the spam folder. I know that, but if your audience is not tech savvy as you said this might be a reason.

50% is ok, I usually get between 40% and 65%

You can turn off the double optin. I use a single opt in and my average conversion is 37.1%
