How would YOU go about a discount of your product?

OK, so if you had a list and wanted to offer a one day 50% discount would you do it.

I am selling a course (ebook and CDs) and my concern is about the people that do not buy on that day, I'm afraid my list will become less responsive because of the perceived value of the product.

Somebody might think, 'OK, he was selling this for 23 last week, why would I buy it for 47 now?'

Any experiences or just thoughts about this, fellow tribesmen?

  • Anyone who sees the discount on that particular day, that doesn't buy because of whatever reason, will most likely not pay double the price at a later date.

The only discounts I'll have these days are for new products, and the discount usually lasts for one week. In that week I give everybody on my list every possible reason and chance to buy at the discount. If they don't buy after the week is over, chances are they were never going to buy anyway. I would then promote that product to new subscribers only at the full price.

Later on down the road (month or two) I will then re insert that product and promote it to old subscribers. But only after a cooling period.

Of course, there are many other scenarios with many other variables to consider, but that's a simple way to look at it.

I do not discount any of my products.
While its a strategy that works for some people, I have always believed in maintaining a more expensive brand, and I would not discount my products like that.
In the long run, I find it to be a much more profitable model.
This strategy works when you build products that people need, not people want.

I know a product I am using recently launched and have a lower price for a few months after launch and will increase it permanently after.

Kinda a get in early, bonus:
    1. Discount as a thank you for being a "beta" user
    2. Stay at lower rate when price increase across the site

What are you guys's thoughts on that concept?

Also thoughts on coupon code's on payment page?

I have a special code I use that appears under the order link that says something like this...

If you were given a special offer code, enter it here
    (textbox to enter code)
    Then click the button to:
    (Get Special Offer)

(Submit button says "Get Special Offer")

If the correct code is entered into the textbox and the Get Special Offer button is clicked the buyer goes directly to PayPal to pay the discounted price.

Otherwise, the buyer will have to pay the listed price.

I can send the special code to the people on my list or allow affiliates to give the people on their lists a discount if they want.

It is important to realize that when the product is discounted the affiliate's commission will also be less so that is why I leave the discount availability up to each affiliate. It does give the appearance that the affiliate does have special influence if they do give out the code to their list and other affiliates don't.

The code can be removed from the sales letter or the code changed after the discount period is over.

I believe this is the fairest way to give discounts. I almost never give blanket discounts so all buyers get a discount up to a specific time or date.

I hope this has been helpful,
