Fake confirmation message to segment list

I often see the question...Should I use single or double(confirmation) optin.

If your service has the ability to move a user to a new list based on a link being clicked or has an API that could be set up to do this, you could...

Set it to single (confirmation off) and send a fake confirmation email and if they click on the link in the message to confirm, then move them to a new list. This way you will have a list of those that confirmed and those that didn't and you can still market to both.

You could track to see how they convert between the two and make a decision based on real stats which you think is better. You could more aggressively market to those that confirmed, as on the surface they seem to be more interested, etc...

I think the issue would be that people saw the confirmation and didnt respond. But they would still get emails.

I think it might be better to A/B test. And put half the people on double opt in for a list. And then put the other half in single opt in.

It would be interesting to then look at : list size, opens, complaint rate on both lists. That said I dont know how to do this with aweber/mailchimp etc.

You don't have to send a message that says you have to confirm in order to receive messages. You just send an email asking them to confirm their email address.

I shouldn't have used the word Fake...more like a soft confirmation.

As another great user said on another thread, frame it as "receiving bonuses" rather than "confirm your email", which is boring.

I've seen a number of solo ad providers do this from time to time. Usually when they want to segment active subscribers or segment them to another list, so they can send as someone else to improve their click ratio.

Just like this one for example: Screenshot by Lightshot
