How to avoid the 'Promotion' category in Gmail?

Does anybody know how to avoid the 'Promotion' category label in Gmail's inbox? Obviously, it'd be better to hit the 'Primary' category- but a lot of emails still end up in the 'Promotion' category.

Any advice?

Thanks!

That's what I was going to throw out there. Putting a ? in the subject line helps. Not including more than 1 link in the body helps, too.

How about any advice for structuring your emails so Google doesn't automatically detect and label it as 'Promotion' material? It's very clear that some marketers know how to get around this. Share some tips with me and I'll subscribe to your list.

Avoid obvious seller terms like "free", "cheap", "discount", "buy" in your subject line. Instead ask a question in the subject line. This will help with the "promotion" folder problem but should also improve your open rate. Also try not to use too many links in the message "body" as this can also be a trigger for Gmail to class the message as promotional.
