Does this strategy work well?

If instead of sending your subscribers messages of value and messages telling them they should buy this and that, you just sent them an email telling them there is a new post on your blog, and then they go to your blog to read all the information...

Would that convert as well?

The only reason I'm considering this is because I'm afraid of breaking one of the many laws, and I figure that if you only send your subscribers a link to a new blog post you can't possibly break any laws, right?

a mixture is always best. Sending a link to blog posts/website content is a great way to keep your list engaged and not always bombarded with promotions. I also put a link to my website in my email signatures

Of course, it will cause much less irritation in followers if you'll just offer to read useful article, than buy something. I think, you should test these 2 strategies and you'll find out what works for your followers better.
But I'm sure that as a result you'll choose a mix of these two strategies - offers to read the aricle will become a basis, but without direct appeals "buy" it's impossible to manage.
