Is it acceptable or just spamming

I see that email marketing is being used but mostly it seems to be spamming. I really can't tell the difference between valid email marketing and spamming. Can anyone explain?

It really just boils down to if the person sending the email has permission to send the message to the recipient or not.

So if someone sends you a message without your permission, then that is spam.
If you signed up to list...giving permission, and they send you a message, then that is email marketing.

In the above two examples, it can be the exact same sender and the exact same message. it's just comes down to if they have permission to send it or not.

That's not true, spam doesn't mean non-permission based, you could VERY well get permission and still have emails marked as spam or considered spam. If you opt onto a list about marketing, and that person blast out a Viagra offer to you - that can be considered spam as that's not relevant to what you signed up for, permission based or not. Plenty of BIGGER companies send out non permission based email. People advise for most not to do it, because you more than likely don't know how and won't do it properly. Most people that teach you that myth of not allowed to send non-permission based email are the same guys selling landing pages and/or teaching how to build a list via landing pages.

Sometimes you guys make me laugh with the misinformation put out.

Spam per definition: irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients.

Sending out emails that are RELEVANT to a particular business is not spam.

You do NOT need permission to email a business... You DO need permission to email a consumer. Big difference.

Can-Spam act ALLOWS you to send non permission based emails PROVIDED you follow the guidelines. Obviously, there is more to learn.

So if you have a facebook page that has 5000 likes on it and then you export all the email addresses to your yahoo email account then email those 5000 email addresses, it's spam right?

You just sign up for a yahoo mail account and there's a feature that allows you to "import" your contacts.

One of the ways you can import your contacts is facebook.

    Hey Anibal,

With Email marketing it boils down to your relationship with your list. First off I would only ever email somebody if they joined my list through an optin page.

Now some marketers just send out promotion after promotion to their list. I see this as just spam, and low quality. This will burn out your list fast, and your list will become unresponsive.

A good email marketer will provide value to their list. Send them great content related to their niche. They focus on building a relationship with their list. They offer value, and then sprinkle in some promotions.

This lets people trust you, and they will be more willing to read what you have to say, and open your emails.

I hope this helps you buddy.

I agree with others that spamming is a waste of time. People these days are fed up with unsolicited emails and if the spam emails happen to make it through the spam filters, the potential customer is going to be annoyed and delete it. Not a good way to build a business.

And, for anyone considering using unsolicited emails to market their products or services, don't forget that it is a violation of the CAN-SPAM Act in the US.

Spamming is a waste of time. Do not do it. I would not import contacts either because they have agreed to be your contact (in theory) and not to receive marketing. Create an offer, maybe a call to action or one time only (OTO) deal and get the email addresses that way. A one time only offer maybe a free ebook; then use the email you send the ebook to for further marketing of a monetary product or service. You should still have an opt-in box at the point of advertising and an unsubscribe link in your emails.

    I hope that this helps.

In the end, I feel that it is all about person's perception. They are the ones that are receiving the mail. If you don't like something, you will see it as a spam. On the other hand, if you like video games and someone sends you link to a new gaming website which you afterwards visit, it is not really spam (even if it was performed as a part of a bigger campaign). At least, this is the way I see my email.

    Hello,
Email marketing has a very wide scope and spamming is just one part of it which is considered unethical. In email marketing, you have an email campaign about your product and you have an email list (with opt -in or without opt-in permission) to which you send this campaign in view of generating a sale.
Spamming as mentioned in the above replies is sending the email campaign to an email list without the opt-in permission.

    Hi Anibal

I myself cannot explain what spam is. All I know is that these are unsolicited emails that are sent to my account which enters my spam folder. However, I agree with niksto82 that it depends on the recipient how he/she would perceive it. When you received an email that appears interesting to you, then you may not consider it spam anymore.

If the person receiving emails signed up for them then it isn't spam.

The trick is getting people to sign up. You have to promise them something useful then deliver.
