What Web Hosting to Use for Interspire and 3rd Party SMTP?

I think the answer is going to depend on what you plan on sending and how much. If you're hosting your interspire mail system and using a 3rd party smtp, you should be able to host anywhere. Then it comes down to volume... since you're hosting your app, it need to be able to handle the activity requests/queries. That comes down to http and database server concurrency. They need to be optimized to handle the volume. Depending on your list size and activity expectations, that could require shared, vps, dedicated, cluster or cloud services.

So, I would first look at the list, the plan for sends, the activity expectations (clicks, opens, etc) and then you can start looking for hosting. Just go with a reputable host if your mass mailing is legit. Cost is more, but the support is just as important as the cost.

It is very difficult to estimate capability. But maybe this could help... just don't completely base your decision solely on it... it's just a rough idea.

10k's -> Shared... maybe, with slow rates
100k's -> VPS... dedicated, optimized
1m+ -> Cluster... cloud

You're going to need a pretty good solution for 200k daily. From experience, I can tell you that memory and disk are very important. You'll need a good amount of memory and high i/o disk as that is typically the bottleneck.

As for specific hosting solution(s)... it really depends on your budget. If I were to do it myself, I'd go with a scalable solution, and perhaps split the web and database servers so they're not sharing the same resources. Such a solution would allow you to grow and enjoy good performance.

But... there's a lot to it all. It's not just getting hosting and setting up interspire. There's server configurations and optimizations that need to be done. You'll need security measures in place, bounce handling, feedback loop, mx, dk, headers, and much more all properly done or you can either limit your volume capabilities, limit your inbox reach, or worse... get blacklisted on one of the many lists.

This is why many outsource their mail marketing to services. It takes a bit of work to get everything setup properly... but once you do, you're in full control, have much more capability than outsourced services, and likely save a good amount of money over time.
