The Money Isn't In The List After All...

There's this big myth going around.

And you hear it left and right. Everybody and their dog seems to believe it...

« The Money Is In The List », they say.
And it's pretty silly to say that because it assumes having a list = making money. No need for relationship, no need for structure and business ethics.

Nope, they say a subscriber = $1 per month of profits.

Kinda like subscribers aren't humans anymore but numbers... And that's a whole lot of you-know-what.

Email marketing is all about structure and human interaction. Once you learn the correct
business structure and the right way to communicate with your list, you'll be making money every single day of your life if you wish to.

So what do you think?

I have been monetizing purchased data(email) for 16+ years. I heavily promote PPL(pay per lead) offers that have mass appeal. So all a user has to do is fill out a form to maker money, I also promote other CPA offers that require a purchase, but at the same time, I promote offers that have mass appeal or solves a house is on fire type problem.

I have tested sending content and trying to build relationships and it produced no significant difference in conversion over just sending ads, that all I do is send ads. Which is far less work!

So at least in the business of monetizing data with the right offers, what you are saying is not the case.

However, I think what you are saying will hold true for most marketers, because there are many offers that do not work with the way that I do things. Where using more mainstream strategies of building your own list and developing a relationship/trust would produce a different outcome. Also, when it comes to high ticket offers, it becomes mandatory...you absolutely have to build trust.

Actually, the money is in the way you interact with people. No one really likes having their email address filled with spam offers and this is not a business model that will hold for long. You need to create a connection with your customers/readers and then, they will trust your offers. You'll have to work a bit more than simply making a list, but this will definitely be more rewarding.

I think the money is in establishing human relationships not in the list because there are people who are making money without a list but on the other hand having a list increases your chances of making more money.

To think of all the people out there that bought into the whole "every subscriber is $1 a month" and went out there to build lists of thousands of people & then think to them selves "why isn't this working"

I cringe when I see people teach that shit.

The money is in your marketing skills.

Your ability to ethically persuade and connect with people.

Your list is the distribution vehicle.

And dont get me started on the whole "just give value".

The money is in the list therefore your list is your #1 asset in business.

Hmmm … not so. Not even close.

I know of too many guru marketers who have huge lists that are close to worthless.

The money is NOT IN THE LIST.

The money is in the RELATIONSHIP you have with your list (which is the ‘the asset’).

People will only willingly (and happily) take out their credit card and buy from you…

    … if they:

    KNOW, LIKE & TRUST you.

As in, if they believe you have their best interest at heart.

Those feelings are nurtured (over time) throughout the RELATIONSHIP between you and your list.

The #1 asset in my business, is the relationship I’ve nurtured with my prospects and clients over time.

I can send out an email at anytime and generate a few thousand dollars, pretty much instantly.

But I can ONLY do that because I’ve earned the trust and respect of my crowd.

(… and that trust can’t be abused.)
