Hi, my company has a stack of emails from clients that have rented from our car rental company over the last 12 years. We are going to send an email blast to all those clients, mind you, they haven't opted to receive emails from us. What's the best way to do this? For sure, there will be a lot of bounces/unsubscribes and spams because their will be emails that don't work and people who simply didn't sign up that will unsubscribed even though they rented from us. I'm using Mailchimp. Is too many bounces/unsubcribes/spams gonna affect our reputation with mailchimp? Also, if i do decide to send an email blast to all those emails, should i include a discount if they subscribe to our email? or should just send emails without asking them to opt in? I tested a campaign with our 2015 march clients and we only got 2 unsubcribes and 29 bounces which is not too bad, and we got a 1 week rental from one of our past clients (email marketing brings money!). How would the best email marketing strategist tackle this? I would love to hear your intake.
Should i hire a mailchimp expert?

    email blast, strike three . . . you're out!

People aren't going to know who you are or why you're intruding on their privacy so you're going to tick off a lot of prospects.

Your email provider will consider you a spammer if you send a blast to 12 years of former clients. Most likely they will shut you down. Even if they don't, the response you'll get will be miserable. Cold calling to people that didn't give you permission is never the way to build a business.

The average American (don't know about other nationalities) keeps an email address for 5 months then changes for a new one. Knowing that suggests that very few of your messages are going to be read.

Of course, you will do what you want, but if it were me I would delete the list and not waste another minute on this strategy.

This is so true. Cold email blasting is the same as cold calling. It can be effective, but it really annoys people and is obtrusive.

Most people and businesses are so immune to this stuff that is is getting harder and harder to succeed with either method.

I know it's tempting to use that email list and I doubt anyone here is going to change your mind not to use it. If you plan on using it, you might want to run it through an email validation service first.

A lot of people will just mark the email as spam and not click on the un-subscribe links. So make sure you sign up for all the different feedback loops, so at least you'll get notify when this happens and you can start cleaning that list.

Even folks who OPT IN to a list grow "cold" quickly if you don't write to them regularly.

I'm with the rest of the group here. This will probably hurt you professionally more then help you.

Get your back end set up to start building that list, but then be sure that you have some AWESOME content and give new subscribers a REASON to open your e-mail.

Don't just send junk. Be 1) VALUABLE, and 2) ENTERTAINING.

    All the best,

    Pat

    Hey Kenny!

Before you even send, I would run your list through a cleaning service such as, BriteVerify. There’s a good chance a lot of the emails on that list aren’t active anymore so sending to them will cause harm (especially if you’re using MailChimp).

    Good luck!

Not to forget, please use a super clean list, AWS SES is very particular about suspending accounts.
