From 35 email optins per day, to 3500 with one small change

So it helps that the site gets about 450k unique visitors per month, but a few month ago I was stuck at 35 email optins per day. I made one adjustment to our most popular page, and the next day woke up to 1600 sign ups. That was in January. The site is a nutrition blog, so January is always hot.
Then in February shot down to 1000 per day.
I made another small tweak and woke up to 3500 per day.
Since then it has not slowed. Our best day is about 4500. Our worst day is 2800.. Average is 3800 registrations per day.

Now just started split testing our pages, our emails, our offers and every other thing we can think of to increase conversions. We are also going to build a new theme that is more conducive to our message and conversions. Lots to do, but we are averaging 16 front end sales per day, with 3 back end sales per day. We still have lots to dial in, but without any testing and just launching right out of the gate, I'll take it!!

Whoa, seeing the topic, I thought you moved from 35 optins per day to 3500 optins per week. I couldn't have guessed that the 3500 happened in a day, that's such a huge improvement. Did you include a promise to take them to see Santa Claus or what?

  • That's incredible, it goes to show that tweaking and testing means everything online. I'm sure we'd all love to get an idea of the small tweaks that were responsible for such massive growth.

Very inspiring and thanks for sharing.

    Have a blissful day.

      Thanks for kind words everyone.
The basic idea is that we simply limit the page on our site that has the most traffic and require users to optin, to get the full contents. In our case, it is a diet calculator.
In order to get the results, users must optin

The real question is: how many engage with your follow-up or buy your product?

I would rather have subscribers who opt-in because they are motivated to do so, not because they are being "forced". A bunch of emails on a list is not engaged subscribers. Quality is far more important than quantity.

      Good point.

Getting TONS of unqualified list members can actually can lead to LOSS because it costs money to maintain a list BLOATED with people who don't care about your updates.

Thankfully, there's a quick and EASY fix to this: inline CTAs layered over several pages that track KLT

While the cost of maintaining a list that grows by nearly 4k users a day is pretty high, the increase in profit that we saw (double) by forcing "lower quality" leads sign up is well worth it.

I also disagree with you. First this is the building of a prospect list. You have no idea of the motivation of the people who join this list.

These are the people who have entered the top of your sales funnel. It is the job of the sales funnel to turn these prospects into buyers at all the different levels of the sales funnel.

Never prejudge the reasons why people join your list because you have no idea of how profitable each person will be.

      Best regards,
      Steve Yakim

    I disagree.
The quality users are represented in the list already, so anything extra is icing on the cake.
We were getting 1000 users with our first modification which qualified the users. We saw an increase from 35 to 1600, then it settled in at 1000 per day. Quality, volunteer users.
Once we started forcing users to register, we jumped up to 3500 per day.
1000 quality + 2500 forced. Now our message goes to the original 1000 plus the 2500 new.

Regardless of how engaged those new followers are, every single one of them that do engage is one more above the 1000 we already had.
Remember, the additional 2500 people that sign up to our list ARE interested in our niche, our industry, and to a point, to our message. It is our job to insure that our message is spot on so that we convert them. Test, test, test!

Even just 1 sale more, is better than zero sales more. For us, that sale is not just a sale. Not just $47. It is a conversion. Proof that even non-quality users listen to what we say and give us their trust, regardless of entry point.
Our percentages might not look as glamorous but our bottom line does.

I'd rather be the guy that makes $3.000,000 per year on a site that shows a 1% conversion rate than the guy that makes $1,000,000 per year that shows a 3% conversion rate

As far as your question about conversions goes, the same day we sent out 3500 emails, instead of 1000, we doubled sales. It has been that was ever since, and growing now that we are starting to test.
I'll take the drop in conversion rate for double sales any day.

Numbers are numbers man, regardless of how "quality" we want them to be.

      We are so far.
My goal is $3m per year off of this sitem which is very doable.
We still have tons of content and testing to do.
We are only now working ont he email lists and segmentation.
Have done zero retargetting. Zero affiliate offers. Zero paid advertising.

      Loads of improvements to make..

You can get the same results by using "Inbound Marketing" techniques and various features. Exit intent, time tracking pop-up can be a good way to increase opt-in.
