Hi, I know this is a controversial topic but I wanted some insight from people who have bought email lists in the past and successfully marketing their products. I plan on purchasing a large email list and then sending the list a solo ad with a link to optin to my squeeze page and thus a new email list. I feel that the ones that actually optin to my squeeze page would more likely be potential buyers I was wondering if this sounds like this would work? and also how much on average is it to purchase a targeted email list? thanks

I have been monetizing purchased data for over 16 years using PPL(pay per lead...lead generation) offers. I use these types of offers because there is no credit card / purchase required to complete an offer. All a user has to do is fill out a form to generate a commission. Conversion rates are typically much higher because it's a free offer and the offers I send have broad mass appeal. So the potential to generate high volume exists. In addition, I also send some other types of free or almost free offers and even a limited number of offers that are purchases. However, these are very selective, as they still have to have mass appeal.

What I do and what you are proposing is very different. First by sending the users to a squeeze page is going to reduce the number of user that see your offer. Then you have a single offer that you plan to promote. Which is going to limit your potential conversions, because it's a single offer and if they are not interested, then you are done. Where I use many offers, which greatly increases my chances. Then your offer requires a purchase, which again is going to limit potential conversions.

At the very least I would ditch the squeeze page and any data you purchase, you want to have it cleaned by a reputable list hygiene company. I'm not saying it can't work, I'm just trying to show you the difference between monetizing data and buying data to try and generate traffic for a single offer. Which is why some say buying data can be extremely profitable and others say to never do it.

What you will want to do is not just go and buy a list. Buy a small sample and test it and see how it performs. Then you can either go ahead and purchase it or try and negotiate a lower price to help improve the potential profitability of it.

thanks Diablo for your response. I assume you monetize by using broad appeal CPA offers? do people mark your emails as spam alot? I heard that can get you in trouble.

Yes, broad mass appeal CPA offers.

Getting some spam complaints is inevitable. If you use fresh / targeted data and have it cleaned by a reputable list hygiene company it will reduce the risk, but by no means eliminate it. So, it's your job to to try and keep the complaints with in the acceptable range of the ESP. Which there are some tricks to help with this.

If you work with real-time co-reg, complaints are rarely a factor, unless you are overly aggressive with your promotions. However, with co reg you are paying a large premium for the data and some I have no doubt is incentivized and comes with it own challenges. Also, co-reg is more of a list building strategy than a true monetization strategy. But can work, but can be a much slower process.

If you acquire aged data, then it's a whole other ball game and you need additional tools/resources and is far more complex.

Hi calidream217, you can purchase a big e-mail list from anyone but make sure the list is not very old. Because a lot of email ids becoming invalid everyday. You have to verify the list to get only active email list and can send out your opt-in page to get new subscribers. It will not be considered as spam when you send out opt-in page. You should insert unsubscribe link too to avoid spam.

    Thanks

Sounds like you have got a plan. If the list that you buy is big enough and recent enough that you might get a valuable optin list.
