Death of the newsletter?

With content marketers getting smarter, the rise of social media, and the increased popularity of blogs - do you think that the monthly newsletter is now on its way to becoming extinct?

I mean, Facebook for example has provided the Average Joe with a medium where they can now have a two-way conversation with their company of choice rather than waiting for a weekly or monthly update from them. Offers, promotions and company information are constantly fed through to users through social media with the majority of posts pointing to their website.

Blogging is obviously increasingly popular and is an opportunity for the organisation to highlight their issues and key developments so with these factors all working in conjunction with one another, is there really a need for a monthly update from a company?

Personally, I think that the role of the newsletter has changed in the marketing mix and while it's not the only source of knowledge now like it was in days gone by, it is still relevant. It's a good opportunity to round everything up for the reader who might have missed various posts and offers throughout the month.

What do you think? Is it on its way out? Has the significance of the newsletter decreased, or just made a shift?

I agree with you that these newsletter are not as much viable as before. People do tend to check their facebook, twitter and blog more than they check all emails. But it does not mean it should be stopped. Changing the subject of newsletter should make it work, like latest products, monthly review or promotional content etc.

Yeah sure, I agree. Monthly review or round-up is a great suggestion.

I also think that if your budget can stretch, it would be great to get these 'newsletters' back into mailboxes regularly too. Monthly is of course extreme but annually or bi-annually would be something good to look at depending on the nature of your business.

I just keep thinking, surely people who don't spend all day in front of a computer need to know who you are too!

Of course. If you have say 10000 subscribers and you release a new blog post you can quickly get 1000-2000 visitors to your blog post from sending an email. If the content is really good and you have social share buttons, this could bring additional blog post views from social media and maybe even rank well in Google.

Regarding the newsletter. It's all about how close of a relationship can you establish with your list and the quality of the content you release(or exclusive promotions for e-commerce websites).

Yes social media is quite popular, but how many people are going to see your post if you don't pay? And how many are in buy mode?

Well I send both plain emails and newsletters. Guess what? The newsletters have a LOT higher open rate and have a LOT more links clicked. I also personally subscribe to many newsletters and they get read where most emails I receive don't get opened.

So personally I feel the newsletter is actually on the rise. I have some other thoughts on newsletters but I am going to keep them to myself for now.

Of course social media platform works great concerning building brand name of a company; however, I feel newsletters and emails are not dead. If that would have been the case, then email marketing would have been nowhere in the corner by now. On the contrary, I feel email marketing in today's world works the best in the development of a business organisation. In fact, it has worked best for our marketing team as well as for our company.
