Do you ALWAYS Address Your Audience as "YOU" ??

I know the popular thinking is that as a Marketer you should ALWAYS be addressing your Audience ( Blog Posts, Emails, Videos, etc..etc..) as if you are talking to each one of them , one at a time.

So you use the word "YOU". I think this can be beneficial in that it makes the Prospect/Customer feel like you are talking directly to him. Developing a more personable environment.

But there are a number of high profile Marketers including Kern and Bacak who will approach their audience with "hey peeps" or What's up Guys"....in their emails and videos

Heck, what would Life be like if we didn't have are own famed Warrior Member Paul Myers hit us up in his email introduction with "Hey Folks"

I do think it is important when you are writing to your Audience to view them as individuals and have an image that you are writing to one person. So using "YOU" would be the naturally choice.

Although I do find myself in some emails that are less formal saying " hey guys"

How about some of you ?? Do you make it a concerted effort to address your Audience individually in your Correspondence ? Or not ??

    Whatever floats your boat.

As you have stated, there is no hard and fast rule about what works best. Marketers have been successful with varying styles.

I think your audience will be fine as long as you are respectful and courteous, which doesn't include the salutation "Hey dude! or Hey bro!"

It depends on what they opted in for.

I have one list that's, "Hi Fellow Affiliate Marketer!"

I usually say 'you' for most salespages. Sometimes 'we' if it's a specific group.

  • In practice I don't think it really matters. Just be yourself and be consistent so your subscribers get to know you and know what to expect from you.

I think it all depends on your personality type. I always go for the one-on-one communication, so I use "You". Just makes sense and feels right to me. I feel that you should not overthink it and should just do what you would normally do in the offline world...why should it be any different? Just think about it...if you walked up to a friend that you happen to see and say "what's up how y'all doin!" They'd probably look at you like you were crazy or something and turn around in circles trying to figure out who you're talking to. "Oh, you're talking to me lol..." But whatever floats your boat, everybody's different, that's just my opinion.

Hey, I see what you did in the title there!

Yeah, I usually address them on a personal level so I use that word a lot. But if you just come right out and say HEY YOU! it might come off as a little rude.

Wasn't there a Pink Floyd song that said that? HEY YOU

In my opinion both of those methods work, if i was on the receiving end of each of those two ways to address i would see value in both, for the "YOU" I would feel as that the person is talking to me personally, and it adds importance. However, for the "hey folks" it also makes me think that hey a lot of people are probably getting his mails, so he has to know what he is doing in order to be telling this many people what works and what doesn't.

So it really is up to you, I personally just use the "you" way just cause its more "popularly" used so it may be more "tested" to work, but it really doesn't matter to be honest.

    Hope this helps!

I look for ways I might include "we" as in this is a collaborative project, or implying teamwork, or even suggest it's an Us vs Them situation - we are all learning/sharing together. Also, subconsciously, I believe it sets the groundwork for a relationship that leaves the impression - I'm on their side and have a shared understanding of what they may be facing in challenges.

I never really paid any attention it.

Whatever makes sense at the time.

If I know a few people are watching a video of mine than I would address them as you all or guys or folks or anything that can mean group.

Then again I really don't pay too much attention to it.

It DEPENDS on the RELATIONSHIP you have with your subcribers.

It DEPENDS also which kind of target you are pointing to.

If you are writing the mails of an established well-known company in B2B, it may not be suitable to address the leads as they are your intimate friends.

But if you have a list of money seekers, or opportunity seekers, or people who are hungry of infos in a internet marketing niche, they are used to be addressed as friends, cause every marketers compete to be closest as possible to their lists.

In a very generic way, people receive too many mails which are too much formal, and speaks in a forma way: so be more friendly could results in more clicks and open rate.

People want to talk with real people and be addressed like that, in GENERAL, they feel a lot detached when talking with an immaterial entity, so giving the feeling to be their neighbours could work.
