How to avoid getting filtered into spam box?

I want to start up an interesting conversation here. Many marketers over here rely on email as a source of reaching a wide range of demographic to sell their ideas. Because there is a reason behind it. According to Mckinsey and Company research email is still significantly effective at gaining customers than social media sources like Facebook and twitter.

But the problem comes when your email doesn't reach your recipients inboxes. So my question from all warrior fellows at this forum is to enlighten us with your experience that "How you guys avoid getting filtered into the spam box''.

It's a pretty basic question and different experiences shared on this topic can really help new marketers out here.

Cheers-James

  • To avoid your messages goes to spam, Do not use gmail, msn, yahoo etc email address.
Use address like your brand name, your website, example: office @ your website . com

Do not use in headline words like money, email, easy, profit, bonus, free etc...

When people enter first time to your email list send them instruction how to whitelist your email address

Do not send people just promotional email, because you will have a lot of spam checks from your subscribers, and a lot of unsubscribes, and your email address will have bad reputation on servers

I appreciate your contribution. All your points here are standards for people who are starting themselves as email marketers. The point that stands out here is about the usage of headline words. People think that it can can act as a catalyst to attract customers but it always ends up the other way.

      • Thanks James for your info

If you want to be superior you must use some paid tools.

        Something like:mailmonitorapp, senderscore-org, emailreach-com etc..

And in that case, spam will not be a problem for you be passed for you.

For more info, I can tell about more ways to be effective
        1) Sender policy framework (authorizes the IP)
        2) Sender ID
        3) DKIM / emails are digitally signed on a domain basis4)

    Hi James,

Because companies and users are now more cautious about the security of the personal information, spam filters and ISPs are working extra hard to make sure that spam emails do not reach the user's inbox. It is important to understand what spam is, how filters and firewalls work so you don't get flagged.

Some email marketing software provide assistance to make sure that you avoid getting placed in the Spam folder.

Here are a few helpful tips:

    1. be familiar with the CAN-SPAM Act.
    2. Don't use trigger words or phishing phrases
    3. Always place your company address
    4. provide an UNSUBSCRIBE button or link
    5. ask to be placed on the "white list"
    6. maintain text-image ratio

    I hope this helps!

    Best regards,

Nice tips desiree. Maintaining a text -image ratio is very essential. One of the ways to be effective at this is to incorporate HTML designer in the process.

Yes, James. I do find that the text-image ratio is very important. Email recipients are not very patient in looking at emails or reading what you place there. You have to catch there attention immediately if you want to pique their interest at the very least.

You need to know the domain breakdown of your list and set up seed accounts for the top domain. Typically, just having seeds for the big 4...yahoo, aol, gmail and hotmail/outlook will account for up to 90%. But it is still good to know the breakdown. Those will also work for parent related domains that use the same MX servers.

Then you need to test your messages with the seeds and see if they inbox or spam and correct and problems.

Rare anyone references Mckinsey and Company, seems like most people don't know about them.

I see the anonymous email advertising, communications, events, or the money will be put into the spam all, so you should avoid the related headlines words on.

Point number 1 makes sense because an address used more often by you as well as bearing your name should be used to approach your target demographic.

Ways to avoid getting filtered into spam box:
    1. Avoid using spam words and misleading subject lines. Avoid the color red because spammers often use it so some filters look for it. Have clear subject lines. Email providers red-flag blank subject lines or any subject that doesn’t match the email’s copy. Stay away from all-caps and limit the links that you include in your email.
    2. Measure open rates. Track your open rates. If someone doesn’t open your email two times in a row, send them a unique email the third time — one that is more personalized and less sales-y.
