I obtained almost 3,000 email addresses in under 24 hours by posting a single thread on Reddit

Long story short, I did the "get my e-book free for the next 24 hours" tactic to farm email addresses and used Gumroad.com as the platform for people to download (I don't have a landing page yet, working on that)

I posted the promo on a Subreddit related to my target audience. People liked it, a lot. It's currently the highest rated post of the week on the subreddit I posted in. Gumroad requires an email address from all people who download my products and conveniently complies them in a nice list.

I'm a complete noob to email list building, but did I do it right? (Honest question)

I thought it'd take months and months to obtain just 1,000 email addresses. But I got almost TRIPLE that amount in LESS THAN 24 hours by posting a single, intuitive post on Reddit that provided lengthy valuable information and at the very end, a link to download my ebook for free.

You can't just make a spammy "Hey, download my free ebook" post with no other information or help (Redditors despise that, so you have to disguise anything you promote on Reddit in a way that doesn't seem like you're just using them for your own benefit. Provide incentive and credibility)

Is this a reliable method of obtaining emails? Furthermore, every email is from people in my targeted audience, who are interested in my e-book (more of an e-commerce guide), not just random people, so that's got to be even more valuable.

Gumroad even allows you to send mass emails to all of your customers internally on the site. I'll plan to market my other guides to the people I racked up on reddit sometime in the near future, don't want to seem desperate and send promo emails right away, would waiting be the right tactic? Or do you guys just move right in for the kill?

Should I continue to use Gumroad to acquire emails? Its super user-friendly. Not a single complaint from anyone who downloaded it

Also, what is even a "good" amount of email addresses one needs to be considered decent sized and worthwhile? Is 3,000 enough? Hardly enough? More than enough?

I'm honestly not sure if I just got extremely lucky, or if it's really that simple to get emails. Never would have thought, otherwise I would have done this months ago. But now I know.

I already mapped out another 4 or 5 equally sized subreddits with similar target audience that I'm going to do these "24 hour give-away's". But again, in a timely manner. Redditors will catch on to your scheme if you keep spamming the same thread in multiple subreddits, especially related subreddits to one-another since some users from one subreddt may frequent the other and recognize your posts.

Any input?

Basically my main questions are:
- Now what?
- What are your thoughts on using Gumroad.com to build your list?
- In terms of a worthwhile email list, where does the number 3,000 fall under? Not enough, good enough, a lot? I honestly have no clue.

Thanks everyone for reading!

I'm in awe of your self taught technique. You've done a great job at starting to build a list of emails from a targeted audience. Well done.

However, you now have a problem. Every time you need to message these people you can only do it through Gumroad. That's clumsy and you can't run a sequence of emails on autopilot.

Ideally you should be using an autoresponder to do this. You can set up a squeeze page where you can offer your ebook, just as you did in Gumroad. Now your subscribers will be in a list where you can send out an autoresponder sequence of messages on autopilot.

In addition you can send broadcast messages any time you like just with a couple of clicks. Frankly an autoresponder is every marketer's indispensable tool.

To your other question 'is 3000 a good size list'? It most certainly is. I've run highly profitable lists with as few as 500 targeted subscribers.

And that's the key - to have targeted subscribers. Once again, very well done for figuring this out on your own. Most impressive.

Peter, thank you very much for your praise and suggestions.

In regards to only being able to communicate with my customers on Gumroad, could I perhaps take the emals (You can download every customer's email on Gumroad's site into a .csv files) and copy/paste them into a autoresponder as you mentioned?

From there, my first email blast would be something like "Hey there, You received my free e-book recently via Gumroad, hope you enjoyed it! As of today, we will be using so-and-so as a way to communicate with each other, rather than Gumroad's platform".

I know it sounds pretty tacky, however that's all I can think of right now. You may know of a better route to go from Gumroad to my own page.

Speaking of which, I have a website. It's just not specifically for my e-book or other services. But it is identically related to the same audience.

However, I'm confused on wheather I should buy a TheNameOfMyEbookExample.com type of website, or keep my existing one and perhaps just build a page on it that is dedicated to my products for sale, meanwhile keep on writing articles for the "blog" portion of my website. I do have a pretty small following already for it, so I may choose do this rather than starting from scratch with a website dedicate solely to sell my products.

      Which do you suggest?

Thank you again for you time and insight, your post got my brain's gears turning right now Feeling optimistic.

Edit: Also, you're able to send mass emails to all customers on Gumroad as well with other products you have for sale:

But, in the long run, It still would make more sense to make your own platform I suppose. Especially to avoid seller fees on sights light this. But site's like these already have incredible reputation, people feel safe entering their credit card information, or PayPal info onto a site with this caliber of trust.

So say you it on your own site. You'll avoid fees, but you'd also miss out potential customers who may no feel comfortable buying from an unknown website. So wouldn't it even out to a certain degree in the end? With the "not having to pay seller fees VS. lack of trust on your site" ratio?

Thanks again! And thanks to anyone else who'd be nice enough to chime in. I'm a bit confused what to do

The immense power of Reddit marketing is very, very underrated. There's a lot about the so-called "Reddit-Hivemind" that you need to follow, but done properly, the results are massive. (And 100% FREE!)

Might even consider writing a guide on the exact process, maybe even use my own experience as a case-study.

      Thanks for the complement !

        Hi alienbrayn,

I am not that knowledgeable with Reddit customs and standards of practice.

What can you do to get people to up-vote your post? Any small details you can share? I've posted things before on Reddit, with not much results to show for it.

        Thanks

Regarding your questions, GetResponse will allow you to import emails into their system from a csv file providing that you can PROVE that the emails have been collected with the owners' consent.

In your case I think that if you have a conversation with them, and show them what you've done on Gumroad (that they were freely putting in their email address to get your new book) then you should be good to go.

In terms of your website, if you have a domain name that suits the target audience and material, stick with it. Then, as you suggest, create a page for your products or even a page for each product.

Then you can keep blogging on the site and link through to your product page(s) as you see fit.

Don't forget to use an exit popup squeeze page to capture the emails of visitors too.

I just want to address the comment in your post you made:

"...don't want to seem desperate and send promo emails right away"

There was a time when I couldn't cash in on my list for anything...

And one of my mine thoughts was... "I'll wait to send them anything because I don't want to seem desperate and send promo emails right away."

Reality is... after a few hours or a few days most people won't even remember who you are. So when you send them something, no matter how you address yourself in the From Line they won't remember you.

AND... I've found that people are on my list because because they are looking for something I had to offer and would love to get more of it and or they are wanting something in my niche...

...So one day I figured, why wait. I'll start sending them things right away. In fact I now send 3 emails a day.

Below is screen shot of what I make from just 4700 people on my list in the Survival niche.

This is not to brag but when you go for it... you make money.

    So get for it...!!

    Send away....

I would say well played Lad. You utilized your gated assets pretty well and the organic traffic you received was comfortable enough to throw in their email address in exchange for the stuff you were offering. Now build up an attractive landing page and use these email addresses to build up your marketing business.

    Cheers-James
